Please, be gentle… I'm not as strong as I seem.
I can’t believe I’m doing this.
I click the little box to make sure I don’t get any spam, and then I hesitate for a moment before hitting return.
What am I getting myself into?
I know I’ve been complaining about my love life—or lack thereof—to my friends, but that doesn’t mean I’m ready to jump into bed with the first stranger who comes along.
Even if he does have those sexy green eyes.
Even if he does have broad shoulders and a strong jaw.
Even if his smile is sweet and endearing.
I don’t know anything about him, and yet I’m chatting with him like we’re old friends.
What would my mother say?
I cringe, waiting for him to say something else.
But the minutes tick by, and there’s nothing.
I wonder if I’ve scared him off.
Green Eyes in Bloom
I lean back in my chair, scrolling through our chat history.
I study each message, analyzing every word, every phrase.
I look at the timing of his responses, wondering if he’s typing them out as he goes or if he’s taking time to think about his answers.
The blue light from my screen illuminates my face in the dimly lit room.
I look for patterns I might have missed before.
I notice that he deflects all of my questions about his personal life.
He gives me compliments that sound rehearsed.
And then there’s the fact that his story about his job doesn’t quite add up…
The cursor blinks accusingly on the screen, hovering over his profile picture.
It’s a photo of him sitting on a beach somewhere, and it looks too perfect, too professional.
Green Eyes in Bloom
"Why won't you tell me more about yourself?" I type, my fingers hovering over the keys as I hit send.
His reply comes quicker than I expect: "It's complicated, but I promise I'm not hiding anything bad."
I hesitate before responding, "Then why does it feel like you're holding something back?"
I lean back in my chair, drumming my fingers on the desk.
The logical part of my brain is screaming at me to block him, but loneliness wins out.
Maybe I’m being too paranoid.
Sarah always says I push people away too quickly.
Maybe I should try to relax and see where this goes.
I type out a message asking him what he likes to do for fun, hoping a lighter topic will get him to open up without me having to directly ask questions.
While I wait for his response, I pull up his profile again and zoom in on that too-perfect photo.
"You're right, I haven't been completely honest," his message pops up suddenly.
I blink at the screen, my heart racing, and type back, "What do you mean? Is there something I should know?"
There's a pause before his next reply: "I'm not who you think I am, but please hear me out."
Green Eyes in Bloom
I drum my fingers on the desk, weighing his cryptic message against my growing curiosity.
After three deep breaths, I type out a direct invitation to meet.
"Riverside Coffee downtown tomorrow afternoon," I suggest.
"Say around two?"
I pick a public place with big windows and multiple exits.
I want to be able to see him before he sees me, and I want to be able to leave quickly if I don’t like what I see.
He responds immediately, "I'll wear a blue jacket so you can find me."
I blink at the screen, wondering why he agreed so quickly.
But I confirm the meeting time and close my laptop with trembling hands.
I realize I've just set a date with a stranger whose secrets could change everything.
Green Eyes in Bloom
I park my car three blocks away from Riverside Coffee, giving myself time to clear my head on the walk.
My hands shake slightly as I pull out my phone to check the time: 1:45 PM.
Perfect timing to scope out the scene.
I circle the building once, noting the side exit by the dumpsters and the busy street out front.
Through the front windows, I see two empty corner tables with clear views of both doors.
Green Eyes in Bloom
I slip inside and order a small latte before claiming the table furthest from the entrance.
I position my chair so I'm facing the door, then pull out my phone and pretend to scroll through messages while watching each person who enters.
A woman in a denim jacket and fitted white top catches my eye.
She has long, wavy brown hair and moves with the kind of confident grace that draws attention.
I'm still watching her when she opens the door, the bell above it ringing softly.
Her eyes scan the room, and I feel a jolt when they meet mine across the cafe.
They're green, like the photo, but even more striking in person.
My pulse quickens as I realize this is no man.
The mysterious online stranger is actually a woman.
She smiles warmly at me, and I feel my face heat up in surprise and something else I can't name.
I watch as she walks directly toward my table, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor.
"Didn't expect me, did you?" she says with a playful smirk, pulling out the chair opposite mine.
Green Eyes in Bloom
I clear my throat, trying to mask my surprise. "Not exactly what I had in mind, no."
She leans forward slightly, her eyes never leaving mine. "There's a lot more you don't know yet, but I promise it's worth hearing."
