I didn't know what to do, so I just stood there and kept my mouth shut.
"Smell my feet, boy!"
He growled at me again.
I slowly got down on my hands and knees and crawled over to him.
I didn't want to get hit, so I did what he wanted me to do and smelled his dirty, nasty feet.
He always made me smell his feet when he was mad at me.
I didn't know why, but it seemed to make him happy.
Whenever he had me smell his feet, he would sit there and smile, like it was the best thing in the world.
I hated smelling his dirty feet, but I never said anything because I didn't want to get hit.
Sometimes he would even make other people smell his feet, like my mom and dad.
They would always look so humiliated, but they never said anything because they were afraid of making him angry.
My grandad was very mean and he always got angry at everybody.
My mom said it was because he was in a lot of pain.
He had been hurt very badly when he was younger and it still bothered him a lot now that he was older.
I inch forward on my hands and knees across the cold linoleum floor, my palms sweating against the surface.
Grandad's feet loom closer - thick yellowed toenails, patches of dry skin, and dark stains on his white socks.
The musty smell grows stronger with each movement.
My stomach churns as I get within inches of his feet.
He shifts in his recliner, the leather creaking, and pushes his feet closer to my face.
The sharp odor of sweat and decay hits my nostrils.
I clench my jaw and try to control my breathing through my mouth.
My hands tremble against the hardwood as I inch closer.
The musty smell grows stronger with each movement forward.
His feet shift impatiently, and I hear the creak of leather as he leans forward to watch me.
The worn gray sock is inches from my face now, covered in dark sweat stains.
Bits of sock fuzz cling to his yellowed toenails.
My chest tightens as I hover there, trying to delay the inevitable.
"Get on with it, boy," he growls, nudging my shoulder with his toe.
"Why do you make us do this, Grandad?" I ask, my voice barely a whisper.
He pauses, his eyes narrowing as if considering whether to answer.
"Because it's the only way I know how to feel powerful anymore," he finally admits, a hint of vulnerability cracking through his gruff exterior.
