Lily
I was only ten years old when my life changed forever.
It was the day my brother, Eric, died, and everything that happened after that.
My parents were already not the most reliable or attentive ones, but after Eric's death, they became even more neglectful.
They were consumed by their own grief and didn't know how to help me through mine.
They also didn't seem to care that I was struggling.
I was left to deal with my emotions on my own.
Luckily, I had a guardian who stepped in to help.
Sean had been a professional surfer and had been friends with my parents since before I was born.
After Eric died, my parents became so unreliable that Sean stepped in to be my guardian.
He had no children of his own and had always been like an uncle to me and Eric.
With Megan, his sister, as a part of our lives, too, we had a second set of parents who actually seemed to care.
Megan took an interest in me and would spend hours with me doing art or baking.
She also encouraged me to write stories and poetry.
It was through writing that I discovered my love for music and singing.
I would write songs and then sing them in the shower or in my room.
When I turned thirteen, Sean bought me a guitar and it was then that I found my purpose in life.
Grace in the Waves
I sit at my desk, staring at the blank page in front of me.
My new guitar is sitting on the floor next to me, but I haven't even picked it up yet.
I've been trying to write a new song for weeks, but the words won't come.
I've been sitting here for hours, trying to force it, but nothing is working.
There's a knock on my door and Sean pokes his head in.
"Hey, kiddo. How's it going?"
I sigh and rub my temples.
"It's not going."
He nods and steps into my room.
"Sometimes you have to give inspiration some space to breathe," he says.
Grace in the Waves
"Come on. Let's go to the beach."
I shake my head.
"I don't know. I really need to write this song."
Sean smiles and holds out his hand.
"Trust me. The beach is just what you need."
I hesitate for a moment, but eventually, I put my pen down and take his hand.
We walk downstairs and Sean grabs his keys.
We get into his old pickup truck and drive to the beach in silence, the only sound coming from the radio playing softly in the background. When we get to the beach, we walk along the shore for a while.
The waves are crashing against the rocks and I watch them roll in over and over again.
It's calming, but it also reminds me of Eric and how much he loved the ocean.
He was always out surfing or swimming or just playing in the waves.
I miss him so much sometimes that it physically hurts.
Sean seems to sense my sadness because he puts his arm around me and pulls me close.
"I know you miss him," he says quietly.
"But he would want you to be happy. He would want you to keep doing what you love."
I nod, knowing that he's right.
But it's hard when everything reminds me of Eric and how much I miss him.
Sean stops walking and picks up a piece of driftwood from the sand.
He starts tapping out a beat on a rock with it and I find myself humming along. He smiles at me and continues tapping out the beat while I hum along with him.
"Do you remember that song Eric used to sing when we were here?" Sean asks, his voice gentle.
Grace in the Waves
I nod, the melody already playing in my mind. "Yeah, 'Ocean Eyes.' He said it made him feel like he was part of the sea."
I sit down cross-legged on the sand, still humming the tune while Sean continues tapping out the rhythm.
The song is familiar and comforting, and it brings back memories of Eric and me building sandcastles together.
We would compete to see who could make the tallest tower before the waves came in and washed them away.
Sean looks over at me and notices that my gaze has drifted to the wet sand near the water.
He stops tapping the rhythm and stands up, brushing sand off his shorts.
Grace in the Waves
"Hey kiddo, bet you can't build a better castle than your old guardian," he says with a playful grin.
I look up at him and smile, feeling a surge of competitive spirit.
"Oh yeah? Well, I'm going to show you who's boss."
We both laugh, and for the first time in a long while, I feel a spark of joy.
I gather wet sand in my hands, packing it into the first tower of my castle.
The sand is cool and gritty between my fingers, just like it always was.
Sean works beside me, his large hands shaping a moat around his growing fortress.
The incoming tide inches closer and closer, and I race to add details to my castle: small shells for windows, driftwood for bridges.
A wave crashes nearby, spraying us with mist.
I pause to watch the water retreat, leaving behind a foamy residue on the sand.
The rhythm of the ocean matches the beat Sean tapped out earlier.
Sean glances over at me, his eyes twinkling with a hint of mischief. "You know, Eric always said you were the better architect."
I laugh, shaking my head. "He only said that because he knew I'd let him win sometimes."
Sean chuckles, nodding as if remembering. "He was always a little sneak, wasn't he? But he'd be proud of you now, seeing you here, finding your own rhythm."
Grace in the Waves
I stand up from my finished castle, wiping the sand from my hands as I watch the tide creep closer.
The competitive spark from earlier hasn't faded.
"Let's see who can build the fastest castle before the waves reach us," I challenge, pointing to a spot closer to the waterline.
Sean grins, grabbing his bucket and following me.
We sprint to the wet sand, dropping to our knees as the waves retreat.
Grace in the Waves
I frantically pile sand, my hands moving automatically while Sean works methodically beside me.
The water inches closer with each wave.
My tower rises quickly but messily, while Sean stacks his walls with precision.
As the tide finally reaches us, our castles crumble under the weight of the waves, leaving nothing but laughter echoing across the shore.
