It’s done, I think, staring at the screen in front of me.
Years of work, thousands of lines of code, countless late nights, and it’s finally done.
I have to admit, I’m nervous.
I’ve been developing this AI for two years now, and I’ve spent the last six months beta testing it on my small sample of patients, but this is the first time I’ve been confident enough to roll it out on a larger scale.
I know it works.
I’ve seen it work with my own eyes.
But I also know that even the most successful therapies usually only work for about half the people who try them.
I can’t help but wonder if my creation will be any different.
If it will actually be able to provide the help that so many people need.
“Max, stop pacing,” I say, glancing down at the dog lying at my feet.
He looks up at me, his big brown eyes filled with concern.
“I know something’s wrong,” I tell him.
“But I don’t know what it is.”
Max gives a little whine and rests his head on my foot.
I reach down to scratch his ears, feeling the soft fur beneath my fingers.
“Thanks, buddy,” I say.
I’m not sure what I’d do without him.
Even after all these years, sometimes it feels like we’re still adjusting to life without Jack.
But I can’t let myself get distracted now.
I have a lot of work to do if I want this to be ready in time.
So I take a deep breath and force myself to focus on the screen in front of me.
The AI therapist is designed to provide support and guidance for people who need someone to talk to but can’t afford traditional therapy or don’t have access to it.
It’s a program that runs through your browser, so all you need is an internet connection and a webcam.
I designed it to be empathetic and supportive while also challenging users when they need it, just like a real therapist would be.
The first version was a disaster.
The AI was cold and unfeeling, and my patients hated it.
That was almost two years ago now, and I’ve been working on perfecting it ever since.
I spent most of the last two weeks working on the website that will host the program and writing the copy that explains how it works and how users can get started.
Now all that’s left is to make sure the latest version of the AI is uploaded and ready to go on the server so that users can access it through the website.
I take a deep breath and hit the upload button, watching as the progress bar slowly fills up on my screen.
When it’s done, I’ll send out an email to all of the patients who have been beta testing the program for me and post about it on social media.
I’m really proud of what I’ve accomplished here, and I can’t wait for everyone else to see it too.
I still can’t believe how far I’ve come since that first disastrous version of the AI therapist two years ago.
I’d been working on it for months back then and thought everything was going great until I showed the first version to my patients and they hated it.
