"Will you marry me, Emily?"
I don’t know what I was expecting him to say, but it wasn’t that.
I look at the ring in his hand and it takes me a moment to realize what’s going on.
It’s beautiful—a simple gold band with a modest diamond—and I can’t stop staring at it.
"Are you sure?"
I ask, my mouth hanging open.
"Is this a joke?"
He smiles and gets down on one knee.
"Emily Carter, from the moment I met you, I knew you were special.
I want to spend the rest of my life making you happy.
Will you marry me?"
Tears fill my eyes as I stare at him.
I can’t move, can’t speak, can’t pull my gaze away from the ring.
I’m frozen, my heart pounding in my chest.
The restaurant is buzzing around us, but all I hear are his words.
My mind is spinning with all the things I should say, but I can’t think of any of them.
I look over at Sarah, who’s sitting at our table watching us with tears in her eyes.
She gives me a little nod and I look back at Jack.
My hands are shaking and I wrap my arms around myself.
This is a lot of pressure.
I never thought he’d propose to me tonight, not really.
Unexpected Proposal
We’ve only been dating for a few months, but it feels like so much longer.
He’s perfect for me in every way and I know how lucky I am to have him, but…marriage?
That’s a big step.
I swallow hard and try to speak, but my voice catches in my throat.
I clear it and try again.
"Jack…"
I take a deep breath and look into his eyes.
"I…"
I don’t know what to say.
His face falls and for a second I think he’s going to get up and walk away, but then his eyes light up with hope again.
"Yes," I finally whisper, feeling the weight of the moment lift.
