I sit at the table, my heart pounding in my chest.
My parents are chatting with my fiancé, but I can’t seem to join in on the conversation.
I’m not interested in anything he has to say, and I don’t think I ever will be.
I try to push the thoughts from my head and focus on the dinner, but it doesn’t work.
I need to get out of here before I lose it completely.
"Excuse me," I say, standing up from the table.
"I need some air."
My mother looks at me with concern as I make my way to the door.
I don’t look back as I walk out of the restaurant and into the cool night air.
I can’t believe they’re doing this to me.

I thought that by now they would see that this isn’t working and that we should just call it off, but no such luck.
They want this so badly that they’re willing to ignore how unhappy I am.
As soon as I’m outside, I start running as fast as my high heels will allow.
Tears are streaming down my face, and I can’t see where I’m going.
Suddenly, a motorcycle comes to a stop just inches from my face.
Golden Cage
"Oh my gosh, are you okay?"
I look up to see a man looking at me with concern.
"Yes, I’m fine. Thank you for stopping."
I try to wipe the tears from my face, but they won’t stop.
"Do you need some help?"
He asks as he gets off his bike.
"Yes, I’ll do anything to repay you."
I tell him honestly.
"Get on the back of my bike," he says as he hands me a helmet.
I don’t think twice about it as I throw my leg over the bike and sit down behind him.
Golden Cage
"Where do you need to go?"
He asks as he turns his head to look at me.
"My parents’ house," I tell him.
"They live just a few miles from here."
He nods before taking off down the road.
We’re there in just a few minutes, and when we pull up, I see my parents standing in the front yard talking to my fiancé.
My heart sinks at the sight of them, but I know that I have to do this.
"Thank you so much for your help," I tell him as I get off the bike and hand him his helmet.
"No problem, is everything okay?"
He asks as he looks at me with concern.
Golden Cage
I take a deep breath before getting off the bike and walking over to where they are.
"Mom, Dad," I say as I approach them.
My mother looks up, surprise turning to disapproval as she sees me standing there in my evening gown with a helmet in my hand.
"Emily, where have you been?"
My father demands, narrowing his eyes at me.
I take another deep breath before speaking.
"I can’t marry him," I say firmly, looking over at the man I’m supposed to spend the rest of my life with.
He looks shocked by my words, but I don’t care.
I glance over at the man who helped me and see that he is standing next to me, looking at me with support in his eyes.
"I already have a boyfriend," I tell them.
Golden Cage
My mother gasps as she looks at the man next to me.
"Who are you?"
She asks him.
"I’m her boyfriend," he says, stepping forward and holding out his hand for them to shake.
They look at him in shock as they take his hand and shake it weakly.
"This is ridiculous," my mother scoffs, but I stand my ground.
"I love him," I insist, looking over at him and smiling weakly.
