There were only four girls in our Karate class, including me.
The rest were all boys.
There were probably twenty boys and four girls.
When it was time to do the drills that required a partner, our instructor, Mr. Thompson, told all the boys to line up and then told the four girls to choose a partner.
The first girl, Sasha, walked over to one of the tallest boys in the class and said, "I'm going to be your partner."
The boy looked shocked and said, "But I already have a partner."
Taylor, the second girl, walked over to another boy and said, "I'm your new partner."
The boy looked embarrassed as he said, "But I don't want to be your partner."
Nina walked over to Morgan and said, "I'm your partner."
Morgan looked at her with disgust and said, "No way."
Jules walked over to Lucas and said, "I'm your partner."
Lucas looked at her with anger and said, "That's not fair. I already have a partner."
All four of us stood there looking at our assigned boy partners.
The boys looked embarrassed and mad at the same time.
None of them wanted to be paired with a girl.
It was obvious why.
They were all taller and older than us, and none of them wanted to get paired with a girl who was shorter and younger.
Girls Carry Boys
I watch as Sasha steps forward first.
Her shoulders are squared and her face is determined.
Her partner, Mike, is at least a foot taller than her and his face is red with embarrassment.
The rest of us hold our breath as Sasha positions herself in front of Mike and bends slightly at the knees.
Without warning, she wraps her arms around his waist and hoists him up in a fireman's carry.
Girls Carry Boys
Mike lets out a startled yelp and his legs dangle awkwardly.
The entire class falls silent as Sasha takes her first steady step toward the opposite wall.
Mike's face grows redder with each step while Mr. Thompson stands frozen, his clipboard hanging limply at his side.
I watch as Taylor steps forward next.
Her eyes are locked on her partner, Lucas, who towers over her by nearly a foot.
He takes a step back and shakes his head.
"No way," he says, but Taylor is quicker than him.
She grabs his wrist before he can take another step away from her.
In one fluid motion, she ducks under his arm and positions herself behind him.
Then, in a move that looks almost effortless, she hoists him across her shoulders in a fireman's carry.
Lucas lets out a startled yelp and his face turns bright red as his legs dangle in the air.
The dojo is dead silent except for the sound of Lucas's nervous breathing as Taylor steadily makes her way across the floor.
Morgan steps forward, her eyes narrowing at her partner, Jake.
Girls Carry Boys
"Don't even think about it," Jake mutters, trying to back away.
Morgan smirks, "Oh, I'm not thinking—I'm doing," she says, as she swiftly hooks his arm and lifts him with surprising ease.
I watch as Morgan carries Jake across the dojo floor, his face burning red.
Jake squirms and kicks his legs, "Put me down!" he protests, but Morgan's grip is firm.
She adjusts her hold on him, shifting his weight more evenly across her shoulders.
The other students part like a wave, creating a clear path for Morgan to walk through.
Some of the boys snicker nervously while others look away, suddenly finding the ceiling very interesting.
Girls Carry Boys
Mr. Thompson opens his mouth to say something, but then closes it again, his clipboard hanging limply at his side.
Jake's protests grow quieter as Morgan reaches the halfway point, but his embarrassment is evident in the way he slumps against her shoulders.
I scan the remaining boys, who have all huddled together near the wall in an attempt to avoid eye contact.
My gaze lands on Julian, who is tall but lean.
He's perfect for what I have planned.
I stride purposefully toward him, my eyes locked on his.
Julian takes a step back, his hands raised in front of him.
"Don't even think about it," he warns, but I've already closed the distance between us.
In one fluid motion, I sweep one arm behind his knees and wrap the other around his back.
Then, in a move that feels almost effortless, I lift him off the ground in a bridal carry.
Julian freezes, his arms instinctively wrapping around my neck as I adjust his weight in my arms.
"You're stronger than you look," Julian admits, his voice a mix of surprise and admiration.
Girls Carry Boys
I grin, taking a steady step forward, "And you're lighter than you think."
He chuckles nervously, "Just don't drop me, okay?"
I take measured steps across the wooden floor, keeping Julian secure in my arms.
His hands grip my neck tighter with each movement, and I can feel his muscles tensing whenever I adjust my hold.
The other students part like a wave, creating a clear path through the center of the dojo.
Some of the boys whisper and point, while others stare at their feet.
Julian's breathing quickens as we pass the halfway point.
Girls Carry Boys
"I never thought I'd be carried across the room like a princess," he jokes, but his voice cracks slightly.
I carry Julian across the dojo, his arms wrapped around my neck.
He jokes about feeling like a princess, but his grip tightens with each step.
The other students part, some whispering and pointing.
As we near the finish line, Julian's breathing quickens.
I feel him tense against me, his body reacting in a way that shocks us both.
Girls Carry Boys
I quicken my pace, trying to reach the end before anyone notices.
I carry Julian across the dojo, his arms wrapped around my neck.
He tries to keep joking, but his laughter sounds strained.
As we near the middle of the floor, I feel his body tense against mine.
His grip on me tightens, and his breathing becomes rapid.
I quicken my pace, determined to reach the finish line.
Girls Carry Boys
The other students watch, some whispering and pointing.
Just before we cross the line, Julian's body shudders, and he lets out a surprised gasp.
I set him down gently, and he stumbles back a step, his face flushed with embarrassment.
A wet spot forms on the front of his pants, and I smirk, "Looks like you enjoyed the ride a bit too much."
Julian looks down and his eyes widen in horror as he realizes what happened.
He tries to cover the stain with his hands, but it's too late.
The other students have already seen it.
They point and laugh, and Julian's face burns red with humiliation.
He glares at me, his eyes filled with a mix of anger and embarrassment.
I turn away, not wanting to make things worse for him.
Mr. Thompson finally steps forward, his face stern.
"Alright, everyone, that's enough," Mr. Thompson says, his voice cutting through the laughter.
Girls Carry Boys
Julian shoots me a look of betrayal, "You didn't have to do that," he mutters under his breath.
I shrug, trying to keep my expression neutral, "It was just a bit of fun, Julian."
I linger by the edge of the training mats as the other students file out of the dojo.
Julian grabs his gym bag and rushes toward the bathroom, his shoulders hunched and his head down in an attempt to hide his face.
The wet spot on his pants is still visible, and a few of the boys snicker and point as he passes.
Mr. Thompson shoots them stern looks but says nothing.
My stomach twists as I remember the feel of Julian's body tensing against mine, his nervous jokes turning to genuine distress.
Girls Carry Boys
When he emerges from the bathroom a few minutes later, he's wearing fresh clothes, but he avoids looking in my direction.
I linger in the dojo even after everyone else has left, organizing my gym bag and replaying the scene in my head.
The sound of footsteps makes me turn, expecting to see Mr. Thompson, but it's Julian.
He's changed into a fresh pair of clothes and is walking directly toward me.
My stomach tightens as he approaches, his eyes fixed on the floor.
I expect him to be angry or hurt, but instead, his expression is uncertain.
Girls Carry Boys
He clears his throat before speaking, "Do you... want to get coffee sometime?"
I stare at him, taken aback by the question.
Before I can respond, he starts rambling, "There's this new café downtown that I've been wanting to try. I've heard great things about their coffee."
His cheeks flush pink as he speaks.
I shift my gym bag on my shoulder, watching his face for any sign of what he's thinking.
He pulls out his phone, his fingers trembling slightly as he opens the contacts app and creates a new entry.
As he types in my number, he keeps glancing up at me with quick, nervous smiles.
The fluorescent lights overhead cast harsh shadows across the empty dojo.
The training mats where we sparred earlier are still damp from our sweat.
Girls Carry Boys
Julian's fresh clothes smell like laundry detergent, and I can hear the sound of his breathing as he leans closer to show me the location of the café on his phone's map.
I lean against the wall of the dojo, watching as he inputs my number.
The sound of the door opening makes us both turn.
Sasha and Morgan burst through, stopping abruptly when they see us.
They exchange a knowing look before Sasha strides over, Morgan close behind.
Both are still in their gis, their hair tied back in messy buns.
"Hey Sofia," Sasha says with a grin, "Morgan and I were thinking of hitting that new café tomorrow too."
Morgan nods enthusiastically, her eyes darting between Julian and me.
"Maybe we could make it a double date?"
Julian's phone slips in his hands, and he fumbles to catch it.
He finally manages to grip it, his face turning a deeper shade of red.
Girls Carry Boys
"Uh, yeah, that sounds great," he stammers, glancing at me for reassurance.
I nod, trying to suppress a smile, "Sure, the more the merrier."
I pull up the café's location on my phone to show them the meeting spot.
Julian leans over my shoulder, his breath warm against my neck as he points out the best route from the subway station.
Sasha and Morgan huddle around us, their sweaty gi uniforms brushing against my arms as they debate which trains to take.
When Morgan mentions bringing Mike along too, Julian tenses beside me.
I quickly set a firm noon meeting time before anyone can invite more people.
Girls Carry Boys
Julian finally finds his voice, "So, Sofia, what did you think of today's sparring session?"
I glance at Sasha and Morgan, who are now whispering conspiratorially, before answering, "It was intense, but I think we all learned a lot."
Morgan chimes in with a teasing smile, "Especially Julian—he's been talking about it nonstop since class ended."
I stand with Julian, Sasha, and Morgan near the entrance of the dojo, finalizing the last details for our meetup tomorrow.
Julian keeps checking his phone's map, zooming in and out of the location as he explains the best route from the subway station.
Morgan adjusts her gym bag on her shoulder and mentions bringing Mike again, causing Julian to shift uncomfortably beside me.
I cut in before things get complicated, "Let's keep it just us four."
Sasha glances at her watch and announces she needs to leave.
Girls Carry Boys
"Alright, see you all tomorrow then," she says, giving a quick wave before heading out the door.
Morgan follows her, pausing to give me a knowing wink, "Don't keep him waiting too long, Sofia."
As they leave, Julian turns to me, his voice barely above a whisper, "Thanks for that—I was hoping for some time to talk to you alone."
