I walked into the living room and smiled.
The room was clean.
There were toys on the floor and a half eaten sandwich on the coffee table, but other than that it was spotless.
I picked up the sandwich and threw it in the trash.
Then I sat down on the couch and picked up the baby monitor.
I looked down at the screen and saw baby Sarah sleeping in her crib.
I stood up and began to pick up the toys.
As I put each one away I glanced at the monitor to make sure she was still asleep.
After I finished picking up the toys I went into the kitchen and started washing the dishes left on the counter.
As I washed each dish I glanced at the baby monitor that I had placed on the counter.
After I finished washing the dishes I dried each one and placed them back on the rack to dry.
I was about to turn around and go back into the living room when I heard a soft knock on the door.
I froze.
My heart began to race.
I glanced at the monitor and saw that Sarah was still asleep.
I slowly turned around and walked toward the door.
I stopped in front of it and looked at the peephole.
I took a deep breath and looked through it.
There was no one there.
I let out a sigh of relief and went back into the living room.
As I sat down on the couch I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
I glanced at the monitor and saw that Sarah was still sleeping.
Suddenly I heard a faint noise coming from behind me.
I slowly turned my head and looked at the window.
There was a clown standing outside of it, grinning at me with his teeth painted red.
He held up one finger at me.
My blood ran cold.
I jumped up from the couch and ran into Sarah’s room.
When I got there I saw that she had a small scar on her forehead.
I let out a scream and ran back into the living room.
The clown was gone, but I could hear his laughter coming from behind me.
I grabbed my phone and dialed Mark’s number.
As I waited for him to answer I walked back into the living room and looked around, but didn’t see the clown.
"Hello?" he answered.
"Mark, it’s Emily. I’m so scared. There is a clown in your house."
My voice was shaking.
I heard the line crackle and then he said, "What? Where are you?"
"I’m in your living room. I’m baby sitting Sarah. There was a clown at the door. He held up one finger at me and now Sarah has a small scar on her forehead."
The line crackled again and then he said, "Okay, stay right there. Keep Sarah close to you. I’m going to call the police."
Suddenly the lights flickered and then went out.
I was plunged into darkness.
I heard a faint noise coming from behind me.
I spun around and saw the clown again.
This time he held up two fingers at me.
I let out a scream and ran into Sarah’s room.
When I got there I saw that she had another small scar on her forehead.
I grabbed her and held her close to me.
I ran out of the room and into the living room.
I looked around for something to barricade the door with.
I saw a heavy dresser in the hallway and ran over to it.
I pushed it in front of the door.
Then I grabbed a few chairs and placed them in front of the dresser.
As I was moving the last chair into place I heard a faint noise coming from behind me.
I spun around, but didn’t see anything.
I looked down at Sarah and saw that she was sleeping again.
I let out a sigh of relief and turned back to the door.
As I was about to push another chair in front of it I heard a loud bang coming from the other side of it.
My heart began to race again.
I knew that the clown was trying to get in.
I looked around for something to defend myself with, but didn’t see anything.
I ran over to the kitchen and began to rummage through drawers looking for a flashlight.
My hands were shaking as I searched through drawer after drawer, but couldn’t find one.
Suddenly I heard another loud bang coming from the other side of the door.
I jumped up and ran back into the living room.
Then, in the darkness, I heard the unmistakable sound of a key turning in the lock.
I clutched Sarah tightly to me.
My heart was pounding in my chest.
The door swung open and I saw the clown standing there.
He had a knife in one hand and a sinister grin on his face.
My breath caught in my throat as I backed away from him.
His eyes were wild and crazy looking.
He took a step forward and I could feel my heart racing even more.
I was so scared that I couldn’t move.
The clown took another step forward and held up three fingers at me.
I knew that if he got to me I would be dead.
I tried to speak, but my voice caught in my throat.
I looked around for something, anything, to defend myself with.
The clown took another step forward and I saw the glint of the knife in his hand.
I knew that if I didn’t do something fast I would be dead.
I looked over at the kitchen counter and saw a large frying pan sitting there.
Without thinking I darted over to it and grabbed it.
The clown lunged at me, but I jumped out of the way just in time.
He let out a growl of frustration and began to circle around me, looking for an opening to attack.
I tightened my grip on the frying pan, my eyes never leaving his.
"Why are you doing this?" I shouted, my voice echoing in the darkness.
He paused, tilting his head slightly, and whispered, "Because she knows the truth."
I was confused.
"What truth?"
I asked, trying to stall him.
He took a step closer to me and I could see the madness in his eyes.
"She knows that the only way to survive is to be the strongest."
Suddenly he lunged at me again.
I swung the frying pan with all of my might, but missed him by a hair.
He let out a laugh and began to circle around me again.
I was getting desperate.
I knew that I couldn’t keep this up for much longer.
I looked over at Sarah and saw that she was still sleeping in my arms.
I knew that I had to protect her at all costs.
The clown lunged at me again and I swung the frying pan at him with all of my might.
This time it connected with a sickening thud.
The clown let out a scream of pain as he stumbled backward, clutching his head.
I saw my chance and darted forward, but then froze when I heard him say, "You shouldn’t have done that."
I turned back to see him holding Sarah in his arms.
She was still sleeping, but now a small scar was on her forehead.
My heart stopped as I realized what he had done.
"Let her go!" I screamed, my voice breaking with desperation.
The clown's grin widened as he whispered, "Now it's your turn to choose."
Before I could react, the room filled with an eerie glow, and the walls began to shift and close in around us.
I lunged at the clown, my heart pounding in my chest.
I swung the frying pan with all of my might, but he dodged it easily.
He let out a laugh as I stumbled forward, off balance.
I regained my footing and looked up to see him standing there, his eyes wild looking.
Sarah was whimpering in his arms.
The walls were closing in on us and I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
I knew that I had to act fast or we would be trapped forever.
I looked around frantically for an opening.
The walls were closing in on us and I felt like I was suffocating.
I looked over at the clown and saw that he was watching me with a grin on his face.
I knew that he was waiting for me to make a move so that he could attack.
I looked down at Sarah and saw that she was still sleeping in his arms.
I knew that I had to protect her no matter what.
I looked back up at the clown and saw that he was holding up four fingers at me.
