I was fourteen years old and trying to decide what to wear to my first boy-girl party when the phone rang.
My mother got it, which was good because I wouldn't have answered anyway.
It was probably just Luke calling to ask if we wanted anything from the store, or maybe one of the few people who had actually come to stay at the Independence Inn calling to ask Mom a question.
As it turned out, it was neither.
"Rory, it's for you," Mom called after a minute.
I stopped trying to decide between my blue and green tank tops and walked into the living room with a "What?"
Mom handed me the phone with an "I don't know" shrug, so I took it and went back into my room.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Rory."
It was a boy's voice, but not one I knew.
Which pretty much meant it was a wrong number.
"Who is this?"
"I'm Jess. Luke's nephew."
I didn't say anything for a second, because I'd never heard of any nephew of Luke's.
Not that I knew a lot about him, but my mom seemed to think he was pretty much an only child.
Plus, if Luke had a nephew, wouldn't he live with him? Wouldn't he work at the diner instead of causing trouble in New York City?
That's what I'd heard he'd been doing.
I must have missed something in the conversation, because the boy was talking again.
