I don't want to do this.
I don't want to be a part of this.
I don't want to go to the school tomorrow and participate in the "Australian orphanage 1953" reenactment.
I was assigned the role of a young orphan from Australia, but I don't want to do it.
I don't care if it was mandatory, I don't care if everyone else was doing it, I don't care if my teacher was going to give me an F for not participating, I just didn't want to do it.
I didn't care.
I didn't care about any of it.
I just didn't want to do it.
And I wasn't going to do it.
So I said, "No."
My teacher stared at me in shock, her mouth hanging open in her face.
Then she said, "What did you say? What did you just say?"
I shrugged and smiled, "I said no. I'm not going to participate in the reenactment tomorrow."
The teacher looked like she was about to have a heart attack.
She stumbled backwards and fell into her chair, knocking over a stack of papers and sending them flying all over the room.
I smiled and leaned forward, "You can't make me. I won't do it."

I watch as my teacher tries to steady herself.
She smooths her blouse with trembling hands and takes a few deep breaths.
Then she bends down and starts picking up the papers one by one, placing them neatly on her desk.
The classroom feels smaller as she stands up and walks towards me.
She's clutching a manila folder in her hand, and I can see the words "Australian Orphanage Project" written on it in bold letters.
She places the folder on my desk and opens it, revealing a stack of documents and photographs.
She pulls out a small piece of paper and places it in front of me.
It's a worn-looking passport photo of a girl with sad eyes.
"This is your character assignment," she says, her voice firmer now.
I cross my arms and turn away from her, but she continues to lay out the documents on my desk.
Ghostbusters: Firehouse Reunited
There are newspaper clippings, letters, and photographs of people I don't recognize. The bell rings, signaling the end of class, but my teacher blocks my path to the door.
"Sit down," she says firmly.
"We need to discuss your participation."
I roll my eyes and sit back down, crossing my arms over my chest.
My teacher takes a deep breath and looks at me with a stern expression.
"Phoebe, this isn't just about grades. This is about understanding history and its impact on people's lives. You need to take this seriously."
I shrug and look away from her, but she continues talking.
"You're not just representing yourself in this reenactment. You're representing your classmates and your school. You need to take responsibility for your actions."
I sigh and look back at her, "I don't care about any of that. I'm not going to participate."
My teacher leans in, her voice softening, "Phoebe, do you remember the story of your great-grandmother you told me last month? The one about her journey to Australia as a child?"

I blink, surprised by the sudden shift, "Yeah, why?"
She taps the folder gently, "Because this girl in the photo... she was on the same ship."
I sit back down at my desk, eyes fixed on the black and white photograph.
The girl can't be much older than me, but her expression is haunting.
She's standing on the deck of a ship, looking out at the sea with a mixture of sadness and uncertainty.
My teacher pulls up a chair next to me and opens a small leather journal.
"This is Sarah Mitchell's diary," she says softly.
"She kept it during the six-week voyage from Southampton to Melbourne in 1953."
She flips through the pages, showing me sketches of the ship's cramped sleeping quarters and notes about the other passengers.
"She was traveling with her younger brother," my teacher explains.
"Their parents had passed away, and they were being sent to an orphanage in Australia."
As she reads from the journal, I can feel myself becoming more and more immersed in Sarah's story.

I learn about the seasickness that plagued her for weeks, the uncertainty she felt about their future in Australia, and the friendships she formed with other passengers. My teacher stops at a page near the end of the journal, "This is her final entry," she says, her voice catching slightly.
"It's dated the day before they arrived in Melbourne."
I lean forward, reading over her shoulder as she begins to read aloud.
"Today is our last day at sea," Sarah writes.
"I can hardly believe it. Six weeks ago, I was saying goodbye to everything I knew. Now, I'm about to start a new life in a country I've never seen."
My teacher pauses, looking up at me with tears in her eyes.
"She writes about how scared she is, but also how hopeful. She knows that she'll never see her parents again, but she's determined to make a new life for herself and her brother."
I reach out to touch the journal, but my hand trembles slightly.
"Why are you showing me this?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
My teacher meets my gaze, her eyes steady, "Because Sarah's story is part of your story, Phoebe. You have the chance to honor her journey and connect with your own history."
Ghostbusters: Firehouse Reunited
I swallow hard, feeling a strange mix of emotions, "I never knew... I never realized."
