I step out of the shower.

The en-suite is so small I have to dry myself in instalments: head, torso, arms, legs.

I’m used to it by now.

I’ve lived in this tiny flat for three years.

It’s not much, but it’s home.

I wrap my hair in a towel and pull on a pair of sweatpants.

Then I head into the main room.

The flat is one of those kitschy studio apartments—bed on one side, kitchenette on the other, with a small table and two chairs in the middle.

It’s not big enough for a couch or much of anything else.

But it has a door.

A door I can lock.

A door that separates me from the rest of the world.

And that’s all that matters.

My cell phone is on the table, along with a piece of paper that was slid under the door.

I didn’t hear anyone come by, but then, I was in the shower with music playing.

I pick up my phone first.

No messages.
