I’m lying on a metal table in one of the labs at the Science Authority.
I can’t move.
I can’t open my eyes.
I can’t speak.
I can’t breathe.
I’m dead.
No, I’m not dead.
I’m injured.
I can feel that much.
My head is splitting open, throbbing with pain.
I can feel blood trickling down my face from a cut above my eyebrow.
My left arm is broken—the bone snapped in two.
That’s why I can’t move it.
But I can still think.
That’s why I know I’m in one of the Science Authority’s labs.
I remember what happened.
I remember who did this to me.
It was…was…
Damn it!
Why can’t I remember?
I try to push through the pain, focus on the missing memory, but it won’t come.
Instead, I find myself back in the past, reliving a moment from long ago when I was still in training as a memory detective:
"Remember, trainees," my instructor says, "the brain is a fragile thing. It can be injured like any other part of the body. When that happens, memories are lost."
