I was sitting in the break room, drinking tea and checking my phone.
It was my first day back at work after a long break and I was a bit nervous.
I had worked at the psychiatric hospital before, but now I was back and I wasn't sure if I would remember everything.
I was also a bit worried about how my colleagues would react.
I had left quite suddenly and without any explanation and now I was back.
Maybe they thought I was unreliable?
"Tommi!"
I heard a voice behind me.
I turned around and there was my old colleague, Paula.
"Hi!" I said.
"How are you?" she asked. Paula was short with dark hair and she always wore a smile on her face.
She was one of the nicest people I knew.
"I'm fine," I said.
"I'm a bit nervous about being back."
Paula sat down next to me and put her cup of tea on the table.
"Don't worry," she said.
"Everyone is fine with you. Where have you been anyway?"
"I've been working at the health center," I said.
"And now I'm back. Long story."
Paula smiled.
"Well," she said.
"Welcome back. Which ward will you be working on?"
"B. Same as before."
I said confidently.
"Good. I'll be on A. Let me know if you need anything."
Paula stood up and walked out of the break room.
I took a deep breath and followed her.
I walked through the hospital corridors and they seemed familiar to me.
I had worked there for a few years before I left.
I was a nurse and I had always liked my job.
Now I was back, but this time I had a partner who was also working in the hospital, even though she was working with children, not adults like me.
I walked into the ward and it seemed like nothing had changed while I was away.
The same patients were sitting in the same places and the same smell of medicine and disinfectant filled my nose.
The only new thing was a girl sitting in the corner, staring at me.
She was young, probably early twenties, with long brown hair and fragile features.
She looked like she hadn't eaten in weeks and her eyes were empty.
She looked like she had given up on life already.
I felt a pang of sadness when I saw her, but at the same time I felt a sense of hope.
Maybe I could help her?
Maybe she would get better?
I walked towards her, but she didn't even look up.
"Hi," I said gently.
"My name is Tommi. How are you feeling today?"
She looked up at me and I saw fear in her eyes.
"Who are you?"
"Like I said, my name is Tommi. I'm a nurse here. How can I help you today?"
I asked.
She looked down again and I could see that she was shaking.
"I don't know," she whispered.
"I'm scared."
"What are you scared of?" "The voices in my head."
I nodded.
"I'm here to help you. We'll get you through this."
She looked up at me again and her eyes were full of sadness.
"I don't know if I can do this."
"Yes, you can," I said firmly.
"We'll get through this together."
She nodded slightly and I could see that she was trying to hold back tears.
I sat down next to her and put my hand on her shoulder.
"It's okay," I said softly.
"We'll get through this together."
She looked up at me and for a moment our eyes locked.
I felt like I was drowning in them, but in a good way.
"I know," she whispered.
"Or at least I'm trying to. But it's hard."
I looked at her and saw that tears were flowing down her cheeks.
I gently wiped them away with my hand and she leaned towards me a bit.
I felt warmth spreading through my body, but I tried to ignore it.
I didn't want to get too close to her.
She wasn't my girlfriend or family member, she was my patient.
But even though I knew that, I couldn't pull myself away from her.
"I'm so scared," she whispered again.
"I don't know what's going to happen. I've been in this hospital before, but this time it feels worse."
"You'll be fine," I whispered back.
"I'll be here for you."
"Will you?"
Her eyes were pleading for hope.
I nodded and took her hand in mine.
She gripped it tightly and looked up at me with those big brown eyes of hers.
I felt a pang of something in my chest, but I ignored it and smiled at her.
"Everything will be alright," I said firmly, trying to convince myself as much as her.
I spent the rest of the day with Helmi, talking to her and listening to her.
She told me about her life and how she had been struggling with mental illness for years.
She told me about the voices in her head and how they were always telling her that she was worthless and that she should kill herself.
I listened to her quietly, nodding every now and then.
I didn't know what to say, but I knew that she needed someone to listen to her.
Her voice was trembling as she spoke and I could see the fear in her eyes.
She was scared of being alone, scared of being abandoned.
I squeezed her hand gently and looked into her eyes.
"You're not alone," I said softly.
"I'm here for you."
She smiled faintly at me and I felt a warmth spreading through my body again.
I tried to ignore it, but it was hard.
Helmi was so fragile and vulnerable that it made me want to protect her from everything bad in the world.
I knew that wasn't possible, but I wanted to try anyway.
"Will you stay?" she whispered after a while.
"Yes," I said softly.
"I'll stay."
She leaned towards me a bit and I could feel her breath on my neck.
As I sat there with her, I realized that sometimes being present was the most powerful thing I could offer.
Two weeks later
Helmi was sitting on her bed, staring at the wall.
Her eyes were wide and her movements were erratic.
I walked into her room and she looked up at me.
I could see that she was in a manic phase.
She was breathing heavily and her hands were shaking.
"Hi," I said gently.
I had medicine in my hand and I knew she would have to take it.
She looked at me suspiciously and I could see distrust flickering in her gaze.
"Where is it from?"
She asked.
"It's from the doctor. You have to eat these."
I sat down next to her on the bed and held out the pills.
She looked at them warily and I could see that she didn't want to take them.
But she had to, otherwise she would get worse.
"Come on," I said gently.
"You know you need them."
She looked at me and I could see that she was scared of what would happen if she took them.
But at the same time I could see that she wanted to get better, that she wanted to feel better.
She slowly reached out for the pills and took them from my hand.
I watched as she put them in her mouth and swallowed hard.
"Thank you," she muttered, her voice barely audible.
"How are you feeling today?" "I don't know," she said slowly.
She looked at me and I could see the fear in her eyes.
She moved closer to me and I could feel her body shaking.
Her eyes were searching mine, like she was looking for something.
I didn't know what it was, but I knew she needed me.
I reached out and gently wiped away the tears that were flowing down her cheeks.
She leaned towards me and I felt her breath on my neck.
Our lips touched and a wave of warmth spread through my body.
I felt my heart beating fast in my chest, pounding with excitement.
I had been expecting this moment for a while now, but it still surprised me when it happened.
Helmi's hands were on my shoulders and they were shaking.
She was so fragile that I wanted to protect her from everything bad in the world.
But at the same time, I wanted to rip her clothes off and have sex with her right there on the bed.
It was wrong, I knew that, but I couldn't help myself.
Our kiss deepened and I felt my hands moving down her body, touching every inch of her skin.
I pulled away, reminding myself of the line I could not cross.
I was standing in the dimly lit hospital room, my heart pounding in my chest.
Helmi's whisper echoed in my head, making a thrill run through my veins.
I glanced at the door, making sure that we were alone.
I knew that we shouldn't be doing this, but I couldn't help myself.
Helmi reached for my hand and I felt a jolt of electricity when her skin touched mine.
Guilt gnawed at me, but it was overpowered by desire.
I leaned towards her and our lips met in a desperate kiss.
The world outside of us faded away and all that mattered was the two of us.
Helmi's eyes were gazing into mine, her voice trembling as she whispered, "I love you."
My heart was racing in my chest, but a heaviness settled in my stomach.
I had been expecting this moment for a while now, but I still didn't know how to react.
I looked at her and saw the hope in her eyes.
She was waiting for me to say something, but I didn't know what.
I took a deep breath and tried to find the right words.
Helmi's face was so close to mine that I could feel her breath on my skin.
"I want to love you," I whispered back, my voice barely audible.
"But I can't feel the same."
Her face fell and her eyes glistened with unshed tears.
I felt a pang of regret in my chest, but I knew I had to be honest with her.
I reached out and gently held her hand in mine.
The room was silent for a while, the only sound being our heavy breathing.
Helmi slowly nodded and looked away from me.
I felt a pang of sadness in my chest, but I knew that I couldn't lie to her.
"I'm sorry," I said softly, squeezing her hand.
"I just don't want to hurt you."
Helmi's voice was barely a whisper as she replied, "I understand, but it still hurts."
I leaned towards her and our lips met in a soft kiss.
Her eyes were filled with longing and I knew that she wanted me to stay.
I felt a pang of sadness in my chest, knowing that I had to leave.
But at the same time, I wanted to stay with her.
She was so fragile and vulnerable that it made me want to protect her from everything bad in the world.
I pulled away slowly and looked into her eyes.
"Goodbye," I whispered, my voice barely audible.
"Don't go," she whispered back, her voice trembling with desperation.
Her words hung in the air, heavy with emotion.
I felt a pang of sadness in my chest, knowing that I had to leave.
But at the same time, I wanted to stay with her.
She was so fragile and vulnerable that it made me want to protect her from everything bad in the world.
I took a deep breath and tried to find the right words.
"I'll be back tomorrow," I said softly, squeezing her hand gently.
Helmi nodded slowly and looked away from me.
I stood up and walked towards the door, feeling like I was leaving a piece of my heart behind.
