I remember making this wish...
I was fourteen, lying on my back in the middle of a lake.
The water was warm and silky, a perfect summer night.
My best friend Sarah was floating beside me and my other best friend Mark was sitting in the canoe a few yards away, keeping watch to make sure no one was coming to get us.
We were at the far end of the lake and had come out here to get away from the rest of the world and make a wish.
You know the saying, 'make a wish when you see a shooting star.'
Well we were waiting for one to do just that.
It was something I'd wanted to do since I was eight, but never had the guts to ask until that year.
As we lay there, looking up at the sky we saw one, made our wishes and laughed.
I closed my eyes and wished with all my heart to become a mermaid...I know it sounds stupid, but I've always been fascinated by them.

I woke up to the sun shining through my bedroom curtains.
It was a beautiful day outside and I stretched, running my hands over the bed and feeling the soft sheets.
I reached down with my right hand to push off the blanket, but felt something heavy at my feet.
I frowned and pushed harder, feeling something smooth and slippery.
What the...?
I threw off the blanket and sat up in shock.
Instead of my legs I saw a shimmering tail where they should have been.
I stared at it, feeling my heart pound in my chest.
It was a beautiful shade of aqua, with scales that shimmered in the light.
I tried to move my new appendage, but found it difficult.
It was so different from having legs, I didn't know how to work it yet.
I reached for my phone on the bedside table, but felt my fingers slip off of it.

I tried again, but couldn't grasp it.
My hands felt foreign and I stared at them as if they were someone else's.
I tried to make a fist and then release it, but even that felt odd.
Finally I managed to get a grip on it and picked it up, bringing it to my ear and putting in the code to unlock it. I dialed Sarah's number and waited for her to answer.
She did after three rings and I took a deep breath before speaking.
"Sarah?"
I said softly, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Em? What's wrong? You sound weird."
She said back.
"I...I don't know what's going on. I woke up this morning and...and I'm a mermaid!"
There was silence on her end for a moment before she spoke again.
"Em? Are you messing with me? Because that's not funny."
She said, sounding annoyed now.
"No! Sarah this isn't funny! My legs are gone!"
I said back, starting to panic now.
"Emily, stop messing around. You're scaring me."
She said back, sounding scared now herself.
"I'm not! Come over here and see! Please!"
I begged her, feeling tears start to prick at the backs of my eyes.
"Okay fine. I'll be there in ten minutes. Just...just try to calm down okay?"
She said softly before hanging up.
I nodded even though she couldn't see me and laid back against the pillows, staring at myself in shock.
"Emily, I just got here and... oh my god, you're serious," Sarah said, her eyes wide as she stood in the doorway.
"I told you," Emily whispered, tears streaming down her face. "What am I supposed to do now?"
Sarah took a deep breath, her mind racing. "We need to figure out how this happened and if there's a way to reverse it."

She started pacing back and forth in Emily's room, glancing down at the shimmering tail every so often.
"This is insane," she muttered, shaking her head.
Emily sat on the edge of her bed, her new appendage draped awkwardly over the side.
"We need to figure this out," she said, her voice trembling.
Sarah sat down beside her, reaching out to touch the iridescent scales.
They shimmered in the morning light, looking almost otherworldly.
"I've never seen anything like this," Sarah said softly.
"Me neither," Emily replied, her voice filled with uncertainty.
"Maybe it's temporary?"
Sarah suggested, her brow furrowed.
"I don't know. It feels... permanent."
Mark burst into the room then, his eyes widening as he took in the sight of Emily's shimmering tail.
"Emily?"
He breathed, kneeling beside her and reaching out a trembling hand to touch her scales.
"It's beautiful," he said softly.
"But how? Why?"
Starlight Serenade: A Mermaid's Awakening
"We need to figure this out," Sarah said, her voice steady despite the chaos swirling around them.
"We need to find a way to reverse it."
They spent the next few hours brainstorming, trying to come up with any explanation for Emily's transformation.
They scoured the internet, talked to experts, and even tried contacting mythical creatures.
But every door they opened led to a dead end. Frustration mounted as they hit roadblock after roadblock.
Emily's fingers traced the outline of her tail absentmindedly as she sat on her bed, feeling like a fish out of water.
It was then that a distant memory surfaced in her mind - a memory of making this wish beneath a shooting star on her 14th birthday.
She gasped, her eyes widening as she turned to Sarah and Mark.
"I remember making this wish!"
She exclaimed, her voice filled with wonder and trepidation.
"What do you mean?"
Sarah asked, confusion etched on her face.
"I made this wish when I was fourteen," Emily explained, her words tumbling out in a rush.
"I was lying on my back in the middle of the lake and saw a shooting star. I wished to become a mermaid."
The room fell silent as they digested Emily's revelation. "Do you think that has something to do with this?"
Mark asked, his brow furrowed in concern.
"I don't know," Emily replied, her voice tinged with uncertainty.
"But it can't just be a coincidence."
They sat there for a moment, contemplating the weight of Emily's words.
The room was filled with an unspoken tension, each of them lost in their own thoughts and fears.
Finally, Sarah spoke up, breaking the silence that had settled over them.
"We need to figure this out," she said firmly, her voice filled with determination.
"We need to go back to the lake," she said, determination in her voice.
Emily nodded, a flicker of hope igniting within her.
Sarah and Mark exchanged worried glances, their minds racing with the implications of Emily's words.
As they sat there, a weight settled over them - a weight of uncertainty and the unknown.
But one thing was certain - they had to try and find a way to reverse this transformation.
For Emily's sake, they couldn't give up.
"Okay, so we need to figure out how to get you to the lake," Sarah said, her voice filled with determination.
Mark nodded in agreement, his eyes scanning the room as if searching for some hidden solution.
Emily sat on the edge of her bed, her shimmering tail draped awkwardly over the side.
She tried to move it again, but it felt foreign and unnatural under her new appendage.
"We can't just walk there," Mark said, his brow furrowed in concern.
"We'll have to find a way to carry you."
Emily hesitated, unsure if she could handle that kind of journey. "I can't even move this thing," she whispered, frustration welling up within her.
Sarah reached out and gently touched Emily's scales, marveling at their beauty despite the predicament they were in.

"We'll figure it out," Sarah said softly, her voice filled with reassurance.
Mark paced back and forth in front of them, his mind racing with possibilities.
They needed something sturdy enough to hold Emily's weight, something that could withstand the long journey to the lake.
As he thought, an idea started to form in his mind - a way to transport Emily safely and efficiently.
"Guys?"
Mark said suddenly, turning to face them with a determined look in his eyes.
"I think I have an idea."
Sarah and Emily exchanged worried glances before turning their full attention to Mark.
"What is it?"
Sarah asked, her voice filled with anticipation.
"We have a wheelbarrow in the garage," Mark explained, his words tumbling out in a rush.
"It's sturdy enough to hold your weight. We can use that."
Emily's eyes widened as she considered Mark's suggestion - a wheelbarrow?
It seemed almost absurd, but at this point they were willing to try anything. "Let's do it," Emily said finally, determination etched on her face.
Mark nodded in agreement and together they headed outside to retrieve the wheelbarrow from the garage.

Mark wheeled the rusty wheelbarrow to the back door, its squeaks echoing in the quiet morning air.
Emily awkwardly maneuvered her shimmering tail into the narrow space, her scales glinting under the sun's rays.
Sarah knelt beside her, offering words of encouragement as Mark adjusted the balance of the wheelbarrow.
Emily gripped the edges tightly, feeling the cold metal against her palms.
With a deep breath, Mark pushed forward, navigating the uneven terrain and bumps that threatened to topple Emily from her precarious perch.
Sarah walked alongside, ready to catch her if needed.
As they approached the lake's edge, Emily's heart raced with a mix of anticipation and fear - what awaited them there?
"Do you really think this will work?" Emily asked, her voice trembling with a mix of hope and doubt.
"We won't know until we try," Sarah replied, her eyes fixed on the shimmering water ahead.
Mark nodded, his grip tightening on the wheelbarrow handles. "We've come this far; we can't turn back now."
Starlight Serenade: A Mermaid's Awakening
As they reached the lake shore, Mark and Sarah carefully lifted Emily out of the wheelbarrow, her tail glinting in the sunlight.
"Try swimming," Sarah suggested, her voice filled with a mix of determination and uncertainty.
"It might trigger something."
Emily sat at the lake's edge, her tail shimmering in the sunlight.
She hesitated, staring at the water with apprehension.
"I can't do it," she declared, her voice trembling.
Mark and Sarah exchanged worried glances, sensing the reluctance in Emily's words.
"I can't," she repeated, shaking her head.
Her friends stood there, unsure of how to convince her to take the plunge.
Mark and Sarah exchanged a glance, realizing they needed to remind Emily of her new reality.
Mark knelt beside Emily, his hand reaching out to touch her shimmering tail.
"You are a mermaid now, Em," he said softly, his voice filled with determination.
"And you have a tail. You can swim."
Emily sat at the lake's edge, her tail glistening in the sunlight.
She took a deep breath, trying to summon the courage to take the plunge.
"I know I have a tail now," she said, her voice steadying.
"But I don't know how to move it."
Mark and Sarah exchanged glances, realizing the enormity of the task ahead.
Mark knelt beside Emily, his hand resting on her scales.
"We'll figure it out together," he assured her, his voice filled with determination.
Sarah nodded in agreement, crouching beside Emily.
"Try moving it like you would your legs," she suggested.
Emily focused, attempting to mimic the motions of swimming with her new appendage.
With a deep breath, she slid into the water, feeling the lake embrace her as if it had been waiting all along.
