I lay on the bed, my body shaking, the tears long gone.
There was nothing left.
My head was pounding, and my body ached all over.
I stared up at the ceiling, trying to block out the memory of what had just happened.
"Kai, come here."
I heard my father’s voice from down the hall.
My stomach dropped.
He wanted me again.
I knew what happened when he called for me in that voice.
My body started shaking worse.
I didn’t want this to happen again.
Please, God.
Make him stop.
Make him leave me alone.
I didn’t want this life anymore.
I wanted my mother back; I wanted to go home.
"Kai!"
He yelled for me, and I knew I had to go or he would come find me.
Then he would be angrier, and it would be worse.
I slowly got off the bed and walked down the hall to his room.
He was already in bed, and he looked up at me with a sigh.
"Get in here, boy."
His voice was hard, but his eyes were softening.
I knew that look; it was the one he used when he wanted me but didn’t want to show it.
I went around his side of the bed and climbed under the covers next to him.
"Turn around," he growled at me, and I did so that my back was to him.
Whispers of Solace
I lay still, my heart pounding in my chest as the room filled with the sound of his breathing.
Each second felt like an eternity, but I remained silent, hoping it would end soon.
The door creaked open slightly, and I caught a glimpse of Emily's concerned face peeking in.
Her eyes met mine, and I saw her determination.
She nodded subtly before disappearing again.
My father's grip loosened as he drifted into sleep, and I carefully slipped out of bed.
I tiptoed to the door, pausing to listen for any movement behind me before quietly stepping into the hallway.
The dimly lit corridor stretched out before me, the shadows cast by the flickering nightlight dancing on the walls.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing heart as I made my way towards Emily's room.
The door was slightly ajar, and I pushed it open slowly, my eyes scanning the room for any sign of her.
Emily was sitting on her bed, her eyes fixed on me with an intense gaze.
She beckoned me over with a gentle hand gesture, and I approached her cautiously.
Whispers of Solace
"What's the plan?" I whispered, trying to keep my voice from shaking.
Emily's face set in a determined expression. "We're getting out of here, Kai."
