I was running late for my first day of school.
I knew I’d gotten here early, but then I realized I'd forgotten my math book and had to return to the car to retrieve it.
Now I was sprinting across the parking lot in hopes of making it to class before the bell rang.
As an Omega, I knew being late would be a bad impression, especially when all the other students were on time.
Rounding the corner of the brick building, I quickly pulled open the classroom door just as the teacher called roll.
When my name wasn't mentioned, I cleared my throat to get his attention.
"Um, yes. Here," I replied, quickly raising my hand.
The teacher looked up from his papers with a annoyed expression.
"Name?"
"Kai Richards."
"Welcome, Kai. Take an empty seat."
Glancing around the room, I noticed all the students were paired up in desks.
Quickly scanning for two empty seats together, I didn't find any.
Instead, I spotted a single empty desk at the back of the room and made my way there.
However, before I could sit down, a voice called out, "You can sit here if you want."
Looking over my shoulder, I saw a student pointing to the empty desk next to him.
Turning around further, I noticed he was extremely good looking with short black hair and piercing blue eyes.
My heart skipped a beat as our eyes met for a moment before he looked away bashfully.
I hesitated, glancing at the empty desk beside the handsome student.
His offer hung in the air, but I shook my head and moved to the single desk at the back.
The teacher resumed roll call, and I settled into my seat, trying to blend in.
As class began, I focused on taking notes, occasionally stealing glances at Ryker.
He seemed absorbed in his own world, not sparing me another look.
The lesson dragged on, and I felt a mix of relief and isolation.
When the bell finally rang, students shuffled out.
I lingered, organizing my things slowly, hoping to avoid the rush.
The classroom emptied, except for Ryker, who remained seated, staring at his phone.
I gathered my courage and began to pack my bag, trying not to make eye contact.
Suddenly, Ryker's chair scraped against the floor as he stood up.
I froze, my heart racing, as he walked towards me with an unreadable expression.
"Hey," he said gruffly, his eyes locked on mine.
I swallowed hard, unsure how to respond.
Just as I opened my mouth to speak, the classroom door burst open and a group of rowdy students spilled in.
"Ryker! What's up, man?" one of them boomed, clapping him on the back.
Ryker's gaze never wavered from mine as he replied, "Not much. Just getting to know our new classmate."
The group's attention turned to me, and I felt a wave of anxiety wash over me.
One of them sneered, "Oh, look what we got here. The new kid's an Omega."
Ryker's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched, and he took a step forward.
I instinctively backed away, my heart pounding in my chest...
but Ryker turned to face them, his voice steady, "Leave him alone."
