The year was 1981 and I was twenty-eight years old.
I had just gone through a divorce and had a one-year-old baby boy named Christopher Gardner Jr.
Even though I had never seen him, I loved him so much already.
I was on the verge of becoming homeless, and I had no job.
I had no college degree and no special skills.
All I knew was that I wanted to be the best father I could be to my son, even if he was on the other side of town with his mother.
As I walked down the street with my baby in my arms, I saw men in suits walking in the same direction as me.
I asked myself, "What do they do?"
I asked one of them and he told me that he was a stockbroker.
I immediately said to myself, "That's what I want to do!"
So I went to the local phone book and looked up all of the major brokerage firms in San Francisco.
I called each one of them to ask if they had any trainee programs that would allow me to become a stockbroker without having a college degree.
Most of them said no, but one firm told me that they did have an intern program that would allow me to become a stockbroker without a degree.

I walked into the office building and up to the receptionist’s desk.
She looked at me and my baby and raised an eyebrow.
"May I help you?" she asked.
"Yes, I would like to speak with the manager of the trainee program," I said.
She looked at me skeptically, but she picked up the phone and dialed a number.
"Sir, there is someone here who would like to speak with you about the trainee program," she said into the phone.
She listened for a moment, then hung up the phone.
"The manager will see you now," she said.

I walked into the manager’s office and he looked at me with a stern face.
"May I help you?" he asked.
"Yes, I called earlier about the trainee program. I was told that I could become a stockbroker without having a college degree," I said.
"That’s correct," he said.
"But we only accept people who have some experience in the field. Do you have any experience?"
"No, but I am willing to work hard to learn," I said.
He looked at me for a moment, then shook his head.
"I’m sorry, but we don’t accept people without experience," he said.
