As I walked along the street just outside Canterlot High, I let out a sigh.
I love my school, but I just can’t seem to get used to being here.
I mean, it’s not like I don’t belong or anything.
It’s just that all of the other students are so…social.
I don’t really know how to put it, but I’m just not like them.
I mean, most of them are part of some group or clique.
Like my little sister Adagio, who is part of the ‘popular’ group.
I’m not really sure what makes them popular, but I guess it has something to do with their parents.
Like how Adagio’s friend Penny Appleton’s dad is a rich apple farmer.
I guess that’s why she gets to wear all of those fancy clothes and carry around that expensive backpack.
It’s definitely not because of her personality.
I slow my pace, noticing Adagio and her usual group huddled near the school entrance.
Something's off about their formation - they're circled tighter than normal, heads bent low in conversation.
As I draw closer, I spot Penny hopping awkwardly on one foot, the other bare except for a pink sock with little apples on it.
Her face is flushed red, either from embarrassment or anger, I can't tell which.
The missing shoe catches my eye - it's exactly the kind of designer footwear she'd mocked my boots against last week.
Friendship Is Overrated
"Adagio, where's Penny's shoe?" I asked, trying to sound casual despite the tension in the air.
"It's stuck on the roof," Adagio replied with a smirk, her eyes glinting mischievously.
Penny huffed, crossing her arms, "And it's all because of that stupid dare from your sister."
I lean against the brick wall, watching Penny hop around like a flamingo in her one designer shoe.
Adagio catches my eye and grins, clearly proud of her handiwork.
"Look, Penny's starting a new trend!" she announces to the gathering crowd.
"One-shoe chic!"
The students around us pull out their phones to record this spectacle, and a few even slip off their own shoes in mock solidarity.
Friendship Is Overrated
My stomach turns as I recognize the pattern - Adagio transforming someone's humiliation into the next big thing.
Just last month, she convinced everyone that wearing mismatched socks was cool after embarrassing another student.
I stand frozen, watching the chaos unfold as more students kick off their shoes.
The churning in my stomach intensifies when I spot a freshman girl, Clara, recording everything on her phone.
She's wearing expensive white sneakers - the kind Penny always brags about.
My hands clench as memories of Penny's mocking my boots flood back.
Without thinking, I stride over to Clara, grab her right shoe, and launch it upward.
It arcs perfectly, landing next to Penny's designer shoe.
The crowd gasps.
Clara's mouth drops open in shock.
Adagio stops mid-laugh and stares at me, her expression unreadable.
"Why did you do that?" Clara demands, her voice a mix of disbelief and anger.
Friendship Is Overrated
I shrug, trying to keep my voice steady, "Guess I wanted to see if it would start another trend."
Adagio's eyes narrow slightly, but there's a hint of admiration in her voice as she says, "Looks like you've got more in common with us than you thought."
Standing in the crowd's center, I feel a rush of power I've never experienced before.
The shocked faces around me fuel my confidence.
I bend down and grab Clara's remaining shoe.
She stumbles backward, her sock sliding on the pavement.
"Let's make this interesting," I announce, channeling Adagio's commanding tone.
"Why stop at one shoe?"
The crowd watches, phones still recording, as I weigh Clara's shoe in my hand.
Some students whisper excitedly, others shift uncomfortably.
Penny hops closer, her single sock now dirty, her expression a mix of anger and intrigue.
With a swift motion, I fling the second shoe skyward, sealing my place in this unexpected rebellion.
Adagio approaches, her hand raised in a high-five.
The crowd parts for her like they always do, but this time, their eyes are on me too.
My palm tingles, remembering how many times I've seen Adagio high-five someone while I watched from the sidelines.
Students continue filming, their phones tracking every move.
Clara stands awkwardly in her socks, glancing between me and Adagio.
Penny has stopped hopping and leans against the wall, her expression unreadable.
The morning bell rings, but nobody moves.
My sister waits, hand still raised, while I wrestle with what accepting this gesture would mean.
"Come on, don't leave me hanging," Adagio urges, her voice softer than before.
Clara crosses her arms, eyes narrowing as she asks, "So, are you one of them now?"
Friendship Is Overrated
I take a deep breath, glancing at Penny before replying, "Maybe it's time for something different."
