I awoke to an empty bed.
It’s not unusual for Chris to rise before me, but today I woke with a sense of unease.
It started as a tickle, a feeling of being on edge, without a reason or cause.
Trying to shake the feeling, I tossed and turned until finally giving up and throwing off the covers.
Downstairs I found Chris sitting at the kitchen table, sipping a cup of coffee.
"Good morning," he said, as I passed by.
"You didn’t wake me."
Chris looked at me with sleepy eyes and tousled hair.
"I thought you needed rest."
He hadn’t risen early to go running as he normally does.
Instead, he sat in his boxers and a T-shirt, staring into his cup.
Something was wrong.
Chris didn’t hide his infidelity well.
The guilt was obvious in the weight of his stare, and the slow movement of his body as he lifted the cup to his lips.
I wondered if he would tell me, or if I would have to drag it out of him.
I went back upstairs and started dressing for my run.
I had just laced my shoes when Chris rose from his chair.
"Hey, can we talk?"
Chris stood in the doorway of our bedroom, hesitating, as if unsure of what he wanted to say.
