She finds out the instructor has paired her with a boy twice her size. Jasmine is shocked but decides to carry out the drill. She successfully completes the carry with the boy,Jake, despite initial hesitation and laughter from the boys.

He is a high school student in New York and Sofia's partner in the karate class drill. He is athletic, humorous, and cooperative. Chad easily accepts his role in the drill despite initial surprise at being paired with Sofia. He shows willingness to work together by following instructions from Nina and Jasmine, adding humor to their teamwork by jokingly asking if he gets extra credit for completing the challenge with his dignity intact while maintaining camaraderie with his fellow classmates.
Hunter
He is a strongwilled high school student in New York. He is assertive, humorous, and competitive. Hunter is Nina's partner in the karate class drill and shows competitiveness by competing slightly with Jake to see who Jasmine would prefer as her partner. Despite this rivalry,he remains focused on completing the drill with Nina by his side, showing his willingness to work together as a team while maintaining lighthearted competition among themselves.
I was so excited to go to Karate class today.
I love Karate.
I got to kick and punch things, and it was a great workout.
I was going to be all sweaty and gross when I got home, but that was okay.
It was going to be worth it.
When I got to the dojo, I realized something was wrong.
There were only four other girls there, and the rest were boys.
I didn’t think much of it, as I knew that the boys had their own divisions and the girls had theirs.
But when our sensei announced that it was time for partner drills, I found out that I was wrong.
He didn’t let the four girls pair up with each other like we normally did.
Instead, he paired each of us with a boy.
I wasn’t happy about it, but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to get in trouble.
The boy I got paired with was twice my size and about three years older than me.
His name was Jake, and he was a junior in high school.
I was only a freshman, so I knew that he was older than me just by looking at him.
When our sensei told us what drill we had to do, I wanted to cry.
We had to take our partner and carry them across the dojo on our backs.
There were no boys carrying girls, only girls carrying boys.
I stood behind Jake, who was looking down at me with an awkward smile on his face.
The dojo was completely silent as everyone watched us.
We were the first pair to do the carry, and I knew that everyone was waiting to see if I could do it.
I bent my knees and positioned myself behind Jake, remembering the proper lifting technique that I learned in gym class.
Jake shifted his weight from foot to foot, clearly uncomfortable with the situation.
"Are you sure about this?" he whispered to me.
I didn’t answer him.
Instead, I grabbed his right arm and guided it over my shoulder.
He got the hint and leaned forward, allowing me to hook my arms under his legs.
I counted to three under my breath, tightened my core, and pushed upward with my legs.
Gritting my teeth, I pushed through the burning sensation in my legs as Jake’s weight settled onto my back.
The dojo floor seemed to stretch on forever.
I could hear the whispers of my classmates behind me, but I tuned them out and focused on the task at hand.
I took a deep breath and adjusted my grip on Jake’s thighs, making sure that he was secure.
I could feel his body tense as I wobbled slightly, but I quickly steadied myself, remembering what sensei had said about center of gravity.
Jake remained perfectly still, his breath quick against my ear.
"You're stronger than you look," he murmured, a hint of admiration in his voice.
"Thanks," I replied, trying to keep my focus, "but don't get too comfortable up there."
He chuckled softly, then whispered, "I overheard sensei saying this is a test for a new mixed division."
After I set Jake down at the end of the dojo, Nina stepped forward with her assigned partner, Hunter.
She adjusted her gi and gave Hunter a small nod, signaling him to come closer.
The class watched intently as Nina positioned herself behind Hunter, mirroring my technique from moments ago.
Hunter shifted uncomfortably, glancing at Jake who gave him a reassuring nod.
Nina firmly guided Hunter’s arm over her shoulder, her face set in determination.
Unlike Jake’s hesitation with me, Hunter cooperated smoothly, letting Nina secure her grip under his legs.
As Nina began her carry, the realization hit me that this was more than just a drill—it was a shift in how we saw strength.
Sofia and the last girl exchanged competitive glances after Nina set Hunter down.
"Race you!"
Sofia called out, already crouching for Chad to climb on.
"Ready, Mia?"
Sofia called out to the last girl.
I watched as Mia hesitated, her eyes darting to her assigned partner, a towering boy named Alex.
Sofia nudged Mia playfully.
"Go on, it's not as hard as it looks."
Nina and I cheered from the sidelines.
Mia took a deep breath, positioned herself behind Alex, and attempted to lift him.
Her first try failed, but with Sofia's guidance on technique, Mia managed to hoist Alex onto her back.
After they completed the carry, Sofia and Mia lined up at one end of the dojo, their boys on their backs.
Sofia grinned at Mia.
"Ready to race?"
Mia nodded, determination in her eyes.
"Three, two, one, go!"
They started running.
Their footsteps echoed across the dojo floor.
Nina and I cheered from the sidelines.
Sofia took a slight lead, but Mia pushed harder.
As they neared the finish line, Chad clung tighter to Sofia's back, and Alex gripped Mia's shoulders.
I leaned forward, watching intently.
Sofia was still ahead, but Mia's face was set in a determined expression.
She adjusted her grip on Alex's legs, and suddenly her feet moved faster against the mat.
Sofia glanced sideways, surprised, as Mia pulled even with her.
Chad tightened his hold on Sofia's back, and Alex stayed perfectly still on Mia's back.
In the last few steps, Mia pushed even harder, her breathing heavy.
She crossed the finish line a half-step ahead of Sofia.
After Mia and Sofia finished their race, I turned to Jake, who was still catching his breath from being carried.
I offered him my back again.
"Want to try it one more time? Just for fun."
Jake hesitated for a moment, then grinned.
"Sure."
I positioned myself behind him, and he climbed onto my back once more.
As I stood up, I felt his weight settle against me, but this time there was no fear or doubt in his movements.
We started walking slowly across the dojo, our footsteps echoing in the room.
The class watched us, some clapping lightly.
As I carried Jake across the dojo, I felt something h#d against me.
I realized it was an e###n, but I kept my focus on the finish line, ignoring the sensation.
Jake's breathing became heavier, and I maintained my pace, determined not to let it affect me.
Just before we reached the end, Jake c###d and I felt a w##h on my back.
I paused for a moment, then continued walking and set him down gently at the finish line.
The class clapped, unaware of what had happened.
I smiled at Jake, offering him a high-five.
He blushed deeply and looked away, his face flushed.
"Sorry," he mumbled, his voice barely audible.
I kept my voice steady.
"It's okay."
We stood there for a moment, the tension between us palpable.
Then I suggested, "Let's go sit and stretch."
We walked to the side of the dojo, where the other girls were watching us curiously.
As we sat down to stretch, I could feel their eyes on us.
I focused on my stretches, trying to ignore their gazes.
Jake glanced at me occasionally, but mostly kept his eyes on the floor.
After a few minutes of stretching in silence, I turned to him and said lightly, "Well, that was fun. What's the next drill?"
Jake looked up, his cheeks still tinged with pink.
"Actually, there's something I need to tell you," he said quietly.
I raised an eyebrow, curious. "What is it?"
He took a deep breath, his face still flushed.
"I was wondering... if you'd like to go out on a date with me."
He spoke in a low, hesitant voice, his words barely audible.
I stared at him for a moment, surprised by his question.
Then I smiled and replied, "Sure, but how about we make it a double date with Nina and her boyfriend?"
Jake's face lit up with relief.
"Really? You'd do that?"
I nodded, and he let out a sigh of gratitude.
"Thank you," he said, his voice filled with sincerity.
We exchanged numbers and agreed to meet next Friday.
As we packed our bags to leave the dojo, I told Nina about the plan.
She grinned excitedly and asked me to tell her more about Jake.
I filled her in on the details while we gathered our things.
Across the room, Jake watched us with a hopeful smile on his face.
Nina leaned in closer, whispering conspiratorially, "So, are you actually into him, or is this just for fun?"
I chuckled, glancing over at Jake. "He's sweet, and I think there's potential."
We sat on the dojo floor, stretching after class.
I leaned closer to Nina and whispered, "You won't believe what happened with Jake."
Nina's eyes widened, and she listened intently as I told her about Jake's unexpected arousal during our carry.
I whispered, "He got h#d against my back, and then he c#e."
Nina stifled a laugh, her hand covering her mouth.
"Are you serious?"
I nodded, glancing at Jake, who was still stretching nearby.
"I felt it against my back. It was so warm."
Nina's eyes were wide with surprise.
"Did you say anything?"
I shook my head.
No, I just kept carrying him. After we finished, he apologized and said he was sorry.
Nina squeezed my hand in support.
"Are you okay?"
I nodded.
"Yeah, it was awkward, but we talked about it afterward. He asked me out on a date."
Nina's eyes lit up with excitement.
"Really? What did you say?"
I grinned mischievously.
"I suggested a double date with you and your boyfriend."
Nina's face lit up with delight.
"That sounds like fun!"
We continued stretching in silence for a few moments before Nina spoke again.
"So, are you going to go out with him?"
I shrugged nonchalantly.
"Maybe. We'll see how the double date goes first."
Nina nodded understandingly.
"Okay, just be careful."
I smiled reassuringly at her.
"Don't worry, I will."
I met Jake at the mall next Friday.
Jake looked more relaxed than during our carry, and he smiled at me as we walked through the mall.
We browsed a few stores together, chatting casually about school and karate.
Jake seemed more at ease than before, laughing easily at my jokes.
As we paused near the food court, Nina arrived with her older boyfriend in tow.
She introduced him as Mark, and we exchanged greetings.
Mark seemed nice enough, but I noticed Jake tensing up slightly around him.
Nina suggested we grab some snacks and sit down to talk.
We walked through the mall together, Jake occasionally glancing at Nina and Mark.
As we browsed a store, Jake turned to Mark and asked casually, "So, how old are you?"
Mark smiled, unfazed by the question.
"Twenty-two. I'm in college."
Nina laughed.
"We met at a summer program."
Jake nodded thoughtfully, seeming satisfied with the answer.
We continued shopping, Jake occasionally asking Mark about college life.
I watched their interaction, noting how genuinely interested Jake seemed in Mark's experiences.
As we sat down with our snacks, Jake leaned over to me and whispered, "Do you think Nina's okay with him being that much older?"
I shrugged, glancing at Nina who was laughing at something Mark said.
"She seems happy, but maybe we should ask her later, just to be sure."
Jake nodded, seeming to relax a bit.
"I just don't want her to get hurt."
I squeezed his hand reassuringly.
"Trust Nina's judgment. She's a senior, remember? She's pretty mature for her age."
Jake nodded again, and we continued browsing the mall.
Occasionally, Jake would glance at Mark with a furrowed brow, but mostly he kept his attention on me and Nina.
As we walked through the mall, Nina and Mark held hands occasionally, laughing together as they talked.
Jake leaned closer to me and whispered, "I still can't help but worry about them."
I squeezed his hand again.
"Just trust that Nina knows what she's doing."
Jake nodded once more, but I could tell he was still uneasy about the situation.
After a while, we decided to stop at the food court for some snacks.
I suggested we sit down to eat, hoping it would help ease the tension between Jake and Mark.
Jake agreed, pulling out a chair for me before sitting down himself.
As we settled in, I realized that this was just the beginning of a new chapter for all of us.
