"If you had a choice, would you rather I had four arms or four legs?"
I asked Mike one day.
It was a completely serious and aesthetic question.
I just wanted to know which he thought would look better on me.
I was not planning on getting extra limbs anytime soon.
"Four legs," Mike answered after some thought.
"Why? Would you prefer me to be more catlike?"
Four Arms or Four Legs
"No, it would just give you better balance. And it would be a more unique silhouette."
I leaned back in my chair and started to sketch a quick doodle of myself with four legs on my notebook.
Mike peered over my shoulder.
"See, I think it would be a good look for you."
Chris, who was sitting at the desk next to mine, looked up from his work.
"I think four arms would be better," he said quietly.
He got up and grabbed the notebook from me and started to draw his own version of me with four arms.
But I still thought Mike’s idea was better aesthetically. "Let me see," Mike said, snatching the notebook from Chris.
Four Arms or Four Legs
He grabbed a red pen and started marking it up.
He circled the places where the extra limbs would make it impossible to wear regular clothes, and he drew arrows pointing to where the extra arms would bump into each other when I tried to do things like type or hold objects.
Then he flipped the page over and did the same thing to my drawing of myself with four legs.
I snatched the notebook back from him and started adding more details to my drawing.
I added shoes on all four feet and a belt around my waist that had little pouches for pens and pencils and other office supplies.
Satisfied with my creation, I realized that imagination was the only extra limb I needed.
Four Arms or Four Legs
After our sketching session, I booted up my laptop and opened my digital art software.
I was determined to bring my four-legged self-portrait to life.
Mike peered over my shoulder as I started to work.
Then I added the extra legs and started defining each one, making sure they were in a natural stance and showing off the unique silhouette Mike had mentioned.
Four Arms or Four Legs
Chris peered over my shoulder at this point.
"You’re going to have to change how the extra legs attach to your body," he said quietly. "What do you mean?"
I asked, looking up from my work.
"The extra legs are attached right below your waist. But if you were actually going to have four legs, they would probably be attached closer to your hips, or even lower."
I thought about this for a second, then nodded and started adjusting the picture.
I also added some more definition to each leg, including individual toes and fingernails.
I spent two hours working on it before I was satisfied with how it looked.
