I fell in love with my brother's best friend.
The worst part?
He didn't know it yet.
That fateful night, I had just turned 21 and was celebrating with a few shots and dancing with my girls at our favorite bar.
That was when I first laid eyes on him.
Tall, dark, sinful, and handsome, he walked inside and my heart skipped a beat.
My mind went into overdrive thinking about who the hell he was and why I had never seen him before.
Boy, was I about to find out?
He snagged a beer from the bartender and stood by my brother talking about something that had him laughing.
My eyes were glued to him the whole time though.
I snapped back to attention when I felt arms wrap around me from behind.
"Hey, baby. You were magnificent tonight," some guy whispered in my ear.
I turned around and gave him a cold look.
"Umm... thanks?"
His hands started to creep down my hips and out of instinct, I pushed him away.
"Not today, buddy."
Just as he started to protest, I gave him my best 'don't-fuck-with-me' look and pointedly ignored him.
I found myself looking for the mystery guy once again though.
Our eyes met and he excused himself from Ryan and the other guy he was talking to.
I was standing with my girls, Sarah and Emily, and they were talking about something, but I wasn't paying attention.
I was too busy watching him make his way through the crowd towards me.
He was tall, so he could see over most of the people, but he was still weaving in and out of bodies to get to me.
I grabbed my drink off the bar and took a long sip.
The ice clinked against my teeth as I tried to calm my racing heart.
My hands were shaking, so I set the cup down before I spilled it everywhere.
I could feel him getting closer and closer and I didn't know what to do.
I didn't know if I should turn around or just stare at him like a creep.
Sarah was still rambling on about something when she noticed my gaze had drifted away from her.
She followed my line of sight and her eyes widened in recognition.
"Isn't that Ryan's friend?"
She asked too loudly for my liking.
"Shh! Don't say that so loud," I whispered urgently while looking around to make sure no one heard her.
Too late though, because he was only a few feet away now and I could smell his cologne wafting towards me.
He stopped right in front of me, flashing a charming smile.
"Hey, I couldn't help but notice you from across the room," he said, his voice smooth and confident.
I swallowed hard, trying to keep my cool. "Yeah, well, you kind of stand out," I replied, my voice betraying a hint of nervousness.
He chuckled and ran his fingers through his dark hair, making it stick up in a mess.
"I'm Jake," he said, sticking out his hand.
I took it and shook.
"I'm Lily."
My stomach fluttered at his warm touch.
He smiled again, his eyes never leaving mine.
"Nice to meet you, Lily."
He said my name like it was the only thing that mattered in this world.
I felt a blush creeping up my neck and I quickly looked away from him.
He continued to talk to me and I tried to focus on what he was saying, but I couldn't help sneaking glances at him.
His eyes kept darting back and forth between mine, studying them with an intensity that made me self-conscious.
I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, a nervous habit I shared with Ryan.
Jake's face fell slightly as he stared at me, his expression unreadable.
"You have the same eyes as Ryan," he said quietly, his voice laced with unease.
I nodded, confirming what he had already figured out.
I watched as realization dawned on him and he took a step back from me.
I could see the gears turning in his head as he tried to process what was happening.
He looked around the bar, his eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on Ryan across the room.
He took a deep breath and stepped closer to me again, his gaze locked on mine.
"Listen, Lily. I don't know what to do here," he said softly, so only I could hear him over the music.
"I've known your brother my whole life and I've never seen you before. I'm not sure if this is a good idea."
I felt a pang of disappointment at his words, but I tried not to let it show.
I took another sip of my drink, trying to calm my nerves.
"I understand," I said quietly.
"But if you want to keep seeing each other, we could keep this between us for now. At least until we figure things out."
Jake nodded, his eyes still fixed on mine.
"Okay. Let's do that."
He squeezed my arm gently before turning and walking back to Ryan.
I watched him go, feeling a sense of loss at his departure.
Sarah leaned in, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"What did he say to you?" she asked, barely containing her excitement.
I sighed, glancing at Jake's retreating figure. "He wants to keep it a secret for now."
