I'm in love with a woman I can't have, even though she loves me just as much as I love her. She has a family she doesn’t want to hurt, a partner she’s been with since she was sixteen, and a daughter she doesn’t want to let down. It feels like I’ve known her for another lifetime. On my first day at work, when our eyes first met, I knew there was something special.
Jason Reed
introspective, and conflicted. Jason falls deeply in love with his colleague, Sarah, despite knowing she's in a longterm relationship with another man and has a daughter. He struggles with the moral dilemma of pursuing her while respecting her family commitments. His feelings for Sarah intensify over time, leading to a complex emotional journey.
Emily Thompson
lively, and cherished by both parents.
Mark Thompson
oblivious, and committed. Mark has been in a relationship with Sarah since they were teenagers and remains devoted to their family life together. Unaware of Sarah's feelings for Jason, he continues to provide stability and love to their daughter.
I knew the moment I met her that she would be special.
On my first day at work, when our eyes first met, I felt it.
It wasn’t a spark or a flash or any of the other things people use to describe that moment.
It was more than that.
It was deeper.
It was as if I had lived another lifetime and seen her in another place, another time.
When she smiled at me, I felt as if I had come home.
It took a week or so for me to realize that I wasn’t the only one who felt it.
The way she looked at me, the way our bodies leaned towards each other when we talked, it was all there.
I could tell that she wanted me just as badly as I wanted her.
The problem was, she wasn’t free.
She had a partner and a daughter, a life she didn’t want to hurt.
She had known Mark since she was sixteen and they had been together ever since then.
They had a daughter together, Emily, who was nine when I met her.
They weren’t married but they were committed to each other and to their life with their daughter.
I didn’t know how to make her mine.
I didn’t know how to take that step, to tell her how I felt about her.
It was easy enough to imagine what it would be like.
We would be alone in a room, and I would close the door behind me.
She would look up at me, her eyes wide with surprise, and I would lean against the wall, keeping my distance from her.
"I can’t stop thinking about you," I would say, my voice low and rough.
"I don’t think I can ever stop."
Her hands would tremble as she set down the papers she was holding, but she wouldn’t look away from me.
"What do you want from me?"
I would push myself off the wall and take a step closer to her.
"I want you," I would say, my voice full of longing.
"I want every moment of your time. I want every smile from your lips. I want every beat of your heart."
She would take another step closer to me, until we were almost touching.
"What do you think will happen if we give in?"
I would take another step closer, until our bodies were almost touching.
"Maybe nothing," I would say, my voice full of hope.
"Maybe everything."
And then I would kiss her, softly at first, and then deeper and harder until we were both breathless.
That was my fantasy but it wasn’t something that could ever happen in real life. Sarah was too smart and too kind for me to hurt her like that.
She deserved so much better than a man who couldn’t give her everything she deserved.
She deserved someone who could give her the world and not just a piece of himself.
I knew that but it didn’t stop me from wanting her any less.
I knew that if I had the chance to be with her, even for just one night, I wouldn’t be able to resist it.
The team meeting ended and people began filing out of the conference room.
I stayed seated at the table as they left, watching them go.
Sarah gathered up her papers and files before standing up to leave.
As she turned towards the door, our eyes met for a brief moment before she looked away again.
My heart pounded in my chest as I stood up and walked over to where she was standing by the door. She looked up at me again as I reached out to close the door behind the last person leaving the conference room.
The sound of the door closing echoed through the empty room as we stood there looking at each other.
Then, without a word, she reached for my hand.
Her fingers intertwined with mine, her wedding ring catching the fluorescent lighting above us.
I stepped back from her, trying to put some distance between us.
She followed me, her perfume filling my senses.
My back hit the wall near the whiteboard, the markers rattling in their tray.
Through the glass walls of the conference room, I could see our coworkers walking past, completely unaware of what was happening in here.
Her free hand touched my chest, right above my thundering heart.
The fabric of my shirt felt too thin as her hand burned through it.
