My name is Lynn, I'm 45 years old, married, but not happy, I run a restaurant with my husband, I'm in love with one of my employees who's become a friend to my daughter.
I'm a mother, I have one daughter, 18 years old.
My marriage has been unhappy for a long time, and what hurts me the most is that my husband doesn't love me anymore, if he ever loved me at all.
He barely talks to me, and when he does, it's only about the restaurant.
I hide my feelings for my employee very well.
His name is Jake Anderson.
Anything to please or love him would be the last thing I'd ever do.
It's not the first time I've been in love before.
I was in love before, and I still am.
But I'm not allowed to say that I am.
I have to keep it secret deep within myself.
Sometimes I wish I could just run away and be free, but I know I can't.

I linger in the kitchen after closing time, watching Emily help Jake with the final cleanup.
Their easy laughter makes my chest tighten.
When Jake leaves, I ask Emily to stay behind.
She agrees, and we settle in our usual booth.
The vinyl seat squeaks as I shift uncomfortably.
Emily chatters excitedly about her college plans while I struggle to find the right words.
I need to know how she feels about Jake, if she sees him as more than a friend.
My hands tremble as I stir my cold coffee.
Just as I open my mouth to broach the subject, Emily's phone buzzes - it's a text from Jake.
"Mom, Jake just asked if I could meet him tomorrow after work," Emily says, her eyes lighting up with excitement.
Forbidden Love
I swallow hard, trying to keep my voice steady. "Do you like him, Em? I mean, do you see him as more than just a friend?"
Emily hesitates, glancing at me with a curious expression. "Honestly, I'm not sure yet... but why do you ask?"
She shifts in her seat, her fingers drumming against the screen of her phone.
I force myself to maintain eye contact, even as my coffee cup shakes slightly in my grip.
The fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows across the empty restaurant, making me feel like I'm trapped in a nightmare.
"Because I care about you, Em. And I want you to be happy," I say, trying to keep my voice steady.
Emily nods, her cheeks flushing pink.
"I think maybe I do have feelings for him. But what if he doesn't feel the same way?"
She looks at me pleadingly, and I nod mechanically.
"It's natural to have a crush on someone. And who knows? Maybe Jake feels the same way."
The words catch in my throat, but I manage to keep my voice steady.
Emily's eyes search mine, and she leans forward slightly.

"Mom, is there something you're not telling me about Jake?"
I hesitate, feeling the weight of my secret pressing down.
