I am not a woman who is easily surprised, nor do I let my emotions get the better of me.
However, when I saw him standing there, looking as gorgeous as ever, I couldn’t help but stare.
The man had long been a thorn in my side, and now he was back to torture me some more.
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I stared at him.
He looked just as good now as he had all those years ago.
His dark hair was cut short, his eyes were steady and deep, and his full lips were set in a small line.
I couldn’t tell if he was happy to see me or not.
"Hello," I said finally, breaking the silence between us.
"Hi," he replied, looking as though he was startled.
"It’s nice to see you," I said, trying to break the ice between us.
He grunted and nodded but didn’t say anything else.
I couldn’t blame him.
We hadn’t parted on the best terms.
Although I had never told him about it, I had always thought of him as more than just my brother’s friend.
I had longed for him for years but knew I would never have a chance with him.
Now that I had risen through the ranks and become CEO of a company dealing with technology and innovation, I was sure he still didn’t think of me in that way.
For You
I smooth my dress and walk to the office restroom.
I need a minute to collect myself.
The mirror shows me that I look flustered.
My lipstick is smudged, and my blonde hair is coming loose from the neat ponytail I put it in this morning.
I check my black pantyhose for runs and adjust the seams so they are straight again.
My hands shake as I reapply my dark lipstick.
I debate asking him if he wants to go get coffee with me.
The sound of my heels clicking on the tile floor is familiar as I pace back and forth, trying to come up with a casual way to ask him.
Finally, I have myself under control, and I return to where he waits for me.
"You know, I never expected to see you here," he says, his voice low and almost hesitant.
For You
"Neither did I," I reply, trying to keep my tone light.
"There's something I need to tell you," he continues, a seriousness in his eyes that makes my heart skip a beat.
I follow him into my private office, the sound of my heels echoing on the marble floor.
He closes the door behind us, and the air suddenly feels thick with tension.
I settle myself behind my desk, crossing my legs as he stands opposite me, his hands shoved into his pockets.
His eyes drift to the family photo on my desk - the one from years ago when we were all younger.
I notice his jaw tighten as he looks at it.
The silence stretches between us, heavy and uncomfortable.
I stand up, moving closer to him under the pretense of adjusting the blinds.
His cologne fills my senses, and I grip the window ledge to steady myself.
"Why did you really come back?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
"I came back because there's something you need to know about your brother," he says, his gaze piercing through me.
For You
"What do you mean?" I demand, my heart pounding as I brace myself for whatever revelation he's about to drop.
"Your brother's accident... it wasn't an accident," he says, his words hanging in the air like a challenge.
I feel my world tilt on its axis as I process his words.
The room seems to shrink, and I can't breathe.
I move back to the window, gripping the ledge until my knuckles turn white.
My legs feel weak, and I notice a run in my pantyhose from nervously scratching my leg.
For You
A stack of papers on my desk slides off, scattering across the floor.
I move to pick them up, aware of Mason watching me from behind.
The tight skirt restricts my movement as I reach for a document that slid under my desk.
