As I gazed into his eyes, I could see that he was stripping himself bare.
He knew I was forbidden fruit, and there was no way I could ever be his.
Not only was I his brother’s woman, but I was also the sister of his dearest friend and roommate.
But that didn’t stop him from telling me how he felt.
He wanted me to know that he would be mine if I could only find a way to make it happen.
And I wanted him, too.
I wanted him more than anything else in the world.
The only problem was that I couldn’t see a way out of this mess that would allow me to have Noah without betraying Ember and Caleb in the process.
It wasn’t until we stood at the threshold of my apartment that Noah finally broke the spell between us.
"Goodnight, Maggie."
His voice was husky and emotional as he swiped his thumb across my cheek.
"I’ll talk to you tomorrow."
"Yes," I whispered back, my heart racing.
"Goodnight, Noah."
I watched as he turned and walked down the hall to his room, and then I closed the door behind me with a heavy sigh.
For You Alone
I slide down against the door until I’m sitting on the cold floor, my legs too weak to hold me up.
The apartment is so quiet that it feels like I’m suffocating.
The only sound is my own breathing, shallow and uneven.
Through the thin walls of our apartment, I can hear Noah’s footsteps as he walks into his room next door.
His bed creaks as he sits down on it, and then there’s silence.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath, but my phone buzzes with an incoming text before I can calm myself down.
It’s Ember asking me if we’re still on for lunch tomorrow.
My eyes well up with tears as I read her message, and when I look up again, my vision is blurry.
I press my palms against my eyes, but I can still see Noah’s face in front of me.
Each word he spoke replays in my head like a broken record, and every single one of them burns deeper into my memory. My phone buzzes again, but I don’t bother to look at it.
For You Alone
I know it’s Ember calling to ask me what time she should pick me up tomorrow.
I let it go straight to voicemail and listen as she leaves a message asking if everything is okay.
I sit there on the floor, my back against the door, and listen to her message over and over again until it’s no longer playing.
The silence of the apartment is deafening, and I can feel Noah’s presence next door even though he hasn’t made a sound in minutes.
My phone buzzes again, but I ignore it.
I press my palms against my eyes, trying to erase the image of Noah from my mind.
But his words echo through my head like a mantra, and I can’t stop them from repeating themselves over and over again.
For You Alone
Slowly, I get up from the floor and walk to the kitchen.
I pour myself a glass of water with trembling hands and take a sip.
I pace back and forth in my bedroom, staring at the screen of my phone as my hands shake.
The confession from earlier replays in my head like a movie, and I can still feel the heat of his gaze on me.
I can still feel the gentle touch of his hand on my cheek.
My heart races as I type out a message to him, but then I delete it and start over again.
Through the wall, I can hear Noah moving around in his room, probably getting ready for bed.
The sound of him being so close yet so far away makes my chest ache.
I type out another message, but then I delete it again.
This goes on for almost an hour before I finally come up with something that I think will work.
I take a deep breath and hit send before I can second-guess myself.
A few moments later, my phone buzzes with his reply.
For You Alone
"Meet me at the park tomorrow, after lunch," Noah's message reads.
I hesitate for a moment, then type back, "What about Ember and Caleb?"
