I was in the hall locker area when the alarm sounded.
It was a loud, piercing siren that hurt my ears and made me want to cover them.
The intercom system crackled, and a voice announced, "We are in lockdown. Please get to your designated area immediately."
I hated lockdowns.
They were scary.
I never knew what was going on or if someone had a gun.
I hated not knowing, and I hated being scared even more.
I didn’t have time to get to my classroom, which was all the way on the other side of the school, so I grabbed the door handle of the closest closet and yanked it open.
I darted inside just as another student tried to squeeze into my hiding spot behind the trash cans in the hallway.
Sorry, dude.
Not happening.
You can’t hide behind the garbage.
There wasn’t room for both of us, so I left the door slightly ajar to let him know it was full before backing inside and leaning against it to keep it from opening again.
As I caught my breath, I realized I wasn’t alone.
My eyes adjusted to the dim light inside the small space, and I found myself face-to-face with…Emily.
Holy shit!
My crush was in my hiding spot with me.
I couldn’t believe it.

The closet's darkness was suffocating, and I tried to keep a respectful distance from her.
The janitor's supplies were stacked against the back wall, so I had to lean forward to avoid the mop handle that was digging into my back.
I didn’t want to touch her, but when I shifted my weight, I bumped my arm against hers.
She tensed at the contact, and I quickly mumbled an apology.
We stood there in silence, waiting for the lockdown to end.

I could feel her eyes on me, but I didn’t dare look at her.
The air felt heavy with anticipation, and I could hear my heart pounding in my ears.
I gripped the shelf behind me to steady myself, my knuckles white against the metal.
After thirty minutes, I shifted my weight again, accidentally knocking over a bottle of cleaning solution.
It fell to the ground with a loud clink, and I instinctively reached down to pick it up before it could spill.
My hand brushed against Emily's in the darkness, and I felt her jump at the contact.
I caught the bottle just before it hit the ground and placed it back on the shelf.
"I'm sorry," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the sound of our ragged breathing.
Emily didn’t respond, but I could feel her watching me.
The tension between us was palpable, and I tried to keep my focus on the door in front of me.
The silence stretched out between us like an invisible string, pulling us closer with each passing second.
Finally, Emily broke the silence, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Do you hear that?"

I strained to listen and realized she was right; there were footsteps outside the door. The sound of running and distant shouting echoed down the hall, growing louder with each passing second.
My heart began to pound as I wondered what was happening on the other side of that door.
Was it a teacher checking on students during lockdown?
Or was it someone else?
Someone dangerous?
I pressed myself closer to the door, trying to get a better listen.
The footsteps grew louder and closer, and then there was a pause outside the closet door.
I held my breath as someone or something stopped right on the other side of the thin barrier separating us from the hallway.
The crack under the door revealed several pairs of feet rushing past.
My mind raced as I tried to figure out what was going on. Were we being rescued?
Were we in danger?
What if whoever was outside the door opened it and found us hiding here?
What would they do?
Suddenly, I heard muffled voices shouting at each other from different directions down the hall.
It sounded like people were running in opposite directions, some away from whatever was happening and others toward it.
Flirting With Fire
My mind raced with possibilities, and I found myself wishing more than anything that I could see what was happening out there. The back exit was just around the corner from where we were standing.
If we could somehow make it out of this closet without getting caught or hurt, maybe we could make a run for it and escape through that exit.
