The laboratory was a mess.
Broken equipment and shattered glass scattered the workbenches.
A large fire had clearly burned in the corner of the room, blackening one wall and damaging the ceiling.
Whatever scientists had worked here had left in a hurry, and their project had ended in disaster.
I frowned as I surveyed the room.
Our mission was to retrieve an ancient artifact rumored to be hidden in this laboratory.
I'd expected a simple in-and-out, but now we'd have to search every inch of this place to find what we were looking for.
"Where do we start?"
Mark asked, spinning slowly as he took in the room.
"With the fire," I said.
"Whatever they were working on went up in flames. Maybe that's what we're looking for."
Mark nodded and headed toward the blackened wall.
I followed him, kicking aside broken glass and wiring as I went.
Sarah stayed back, near the door, her long black hair pulled tight in a ponytail.
She didn't like this mission any more than she'd liked the last one, but she'd come along anyway.
"It looks like a ritual circle," Mark said, crouching beside the fire pit.
"Maybe they were trying to summon something. Whatever it was, it clearly didn't go well."
I knelt across from him and began sifting through the ashes.
