Firefighter Emma Campbell calls police chief Ethan Bennett for help when she becomes endangered, leading to a chaotic and unexpected situation involving several toddlers.
I’d just gone on break when the call came in.
A daycare center was on fire.
The dispatcher said that all the kids were accounted for, but it was early, and I knew there had to be kids there.
People lied in a panic.
I didn’t blame them, but when it came to something this important, I couldn’t take their word for it.
When I pulled up to the building, my heart sank.
Flames rose from the roof, and smoke billowed into the sky.
It wasn’t going to be long before the building was nothing but a pile of ash.
Without even thinking, I was running from my truck, heading toward the chaos.
I didn’t know how many kids were inside or if they were okay.
The people who had called 911 had been too busy trying to put out the fire themselves to give the dispatcher any information.
There were several cars in the lot, so I assumed that some of the parents had gotten there before me.
At least there was that.
“Campbell, hold up,” Chief Ethan Bennett shouted from behind me.
I turned and saw him getting out of his patrol car.
As I waited for him to catch up, I reached for my air tanks and mask.
The last thing I wanted to do was waste time when the kids needed us so badly.
“Let’s get a team together and figure out a plan.”
I nodded and followed him as he ran around the back of his car and opened up the trunk.
When he started pulling out his gear, I did the same, grabbing hoses and a ladder too.
The fire wouldn’t be contained until we got more units on scene, but at least this would be a good start.
The sooner we got these kids out of here, the better off they’d all be.
When we rounded the corner of the building and came upon a group of people huddled together, I knew this was going to be bad.
We needed to get inside and get these kids out before we lost them all.
“Campbell, I want you to go in and do a sweep.
See if you can find any kids who are still in there.
We’ll start setting up the ladders now so you can use them to get back out.”
I nodded at Ethan’s order.
Being a firefighter had been my dream for as long as I could remember.
I’d worked my ass off to get here, and I wasn’t about to let something like a little fire stop me from doing my job.
This was what I was meant to do.
Saving lives was the only thing that mattered.
Now, I had the chance to prove it.
“Be safe in there.”
It was good advice, but it wasn’t like there was any other way.
Things could go wrong, sure, but this wasn’t the first time I’d been in a burning building, and it wouldn’t be the last.
As long as I kept my head on straight, everything would be fine.
