"Jaxson is a total fuck boy. I heard he has a new girl every weekend."
The words echoed in my mind as I walked around the campus of Sunset Hills University.
I had just finished my football practice and was heading back to my dorm when I overheard a few girls talking about me behind my back.
It didn’t bother me much.
I was used to being called a "fuck boy" or "bad boy" by almost everyone at this university.
I mean, what else would they expect from the star football player?
But what did bother me was when those same girls mentioned that I had left Hannah, the beautiful theater girl from my high school, crying in the rain a few weeks ago.
I hadn’t actually done anything to hurt her, but she was crying so hard when we were talking outside the theater building that it had left a bad impression on everyone around us.
I could see the guilt written all over Hannah’s best friend Ayanna’s face as she watched me talk to Hannah.
She knew I was into her, but she never gave me any hints about how she felt about me.
All I knew was that she was smitten with my little brother Joshua, but he was too shy to even confess his feelings to her.
I headed to the locker room to change into my normal clothes.
The coach handed us the new practice schedule, which was three hours of practice every day, even on weekends.
I had a feeling that this season was going to be a lot more intense than usual.
As I changed out of my uniform, I could feel my teammates giving me side-glances.
I knew they were all talking about me behind my back, but I didn’t care.
I was used to it by now.
"Hey, man. Is it true?" asked Mike, my wide receiver.
"Is what true?"
I asked him as I closed my locker with a loud bang.
"Are you really going after that theater chick? I heard she’s pretty hot."
"Mind your own business, Mike," I said as I walked away from him.
I could hear him laughing behind me, but I didn’t care.
The practice schedule in my hand crumpled as I gripped it tightly in my fist.
These extra practices meant that I would be missing the theater auditions next week.
I had promised Hannah that I would be there to support her, but now it looked like I wouldn’t be able to make it. As I walked out of the locker room, I saw Hannah crossing the courtyard with her script in hand.
She didn’t even look in my direction.
I sighed and smoothed out the wrinkled paper in my hand.
I would have to figure out a way to make both commitments work somehow.
"Jaxson, wait up," Hannah called, her voice tinged with frustration as she finally approached me.
"I heard about the practice schedule," she continued, her eyes searching mine for any sign of reassurance.
"I just... I need to know if you’re still planning to be there for the auditions, or if I should stop hoping."
I leaned against the brick wall of the courtyard, watching as her shoulders tensed in anticipation of my answer.
The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across her face, making her look more vulnerable than usual.
The new practice schedule burned a hole in my back pocket - three extra hours that directly conflicted with her audition time.
I pulled out my phone, scrolling through my contacts until I found Mike’s number.
He owed me for covering his missed practice last month.
"I can make it work," I told her, already typing out a message to arrange switching practice slots.
I pull up my phone's calendar, showing her the newly cleared afternoon slot.
Her eyes light up, but then dart away nervously when our hands brush as she leans in to check the time.
The courtyard is emptying as students head to afternoon classes, leaving us in an awkward silence.
I stuff my hands in my pockets, fighting the urge to reach out when she hugs her books tighter to her chest.
"Thanks, Jaxson," she says softly, shifting her weight.
"Joshua mentioned he might audition too."
My stomach drops at my brother's name, but I force a casual nod.
