Three days until Halloween and the whole town of Ravenswood is excited.
Everyone loves a good excuse to party, and what better excuse than to dress up in their scariest costumes and party all night?
I certainly do.
But this year was different.
This year was different because a psycho killer was on the loose.
The news said he struck only at night, and only targets people who were alone, so as long as you stuck with a group, you'd be fine.
But the news also said the police were no closer to catching the killer, so who knew how long it would be before he was caught?
It certainly made me nervous, especially since I lived on the outskirts of town, a good fifteen minute drive before you reached the first street of Ravenswood.
I also had a tendency to walk into town rather than drive, which would take about an hour or so.
I loved those long walks through the countryside.
I sat in my dimly lit living room, eyes glued to the TV as the news anchor's voice droned on, detailing the killer's latest attack.
The words blurred together, but the images flashed vividly in my mind: a dark alley, a figure in a hoodie, a victim's terrified scream.
My heart raced, pounding in my chest like a drum.
I glanced at my phone, the screen glowing with Jake's text: "Hey, be careful tonight. Don't go out alone."
I felt a thrill of defiance, my fingers itching to respond with a snarky comment about not being afraid.
But I hesitated, my mind flashing back to the laughter and excitement of my friends as we made plans for the party.
We were going to dress up as zombies, complete with torn clothes and fake blood.
I paced back and forth in front of the TV, wrestling with fear and excitement.
The news shifted to a commercial, and I switched it off abruptly, the sudden silence a relief.
Determined, I pulled out my phone and texted Sarah: "Hey, still on for tonight? Meet you at the old oak at 8?"
My hands trembled slightly as I typed, but my resolve hardened with each word.
I pushed through the crowded entrance of the club, the thumping bass line enveloping me like a physical force.
The air inside was thick with the smell of sweat and cheap perfume, and I felt a shiver run down my spine as I scanned the room.
Familiar faces in elaborate costumes flashed by, their smiles and laughter a stark contrast to the unease that lingered in the pit of my stomach.
Jake stayed close, his eyes darting around suspiciously, his grip on my arm tightening as we navigated through the sea of people.
Sarah tried to dance, her movements stiff with tension, her eyes flicking towards the exit every few seconds.
I felt a pang of guilt for dragging them into this, but my reckless side had won out, and now we were here, surrounded by the pulsating lights and deafening music.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed with a notification, and I felt a jolt of excitement mixed with fear.
I'd won a VIP pass to an exclusive area of the club, and my heart skipped a beat as I hesitated, torn between curiosity and caution.
I flashed the VIP pass to Jake and Sarah, my heart racing with excitement.
"What do you think?" I asked, trying to sound casual despite the thrill coursing through my veins.
Jake frowned, his eyes scanning the crowded room. "I don't know, Amelia. This doesn't feel right."
But I was already pulling them towards the VIP area, my curiosity getting the better of me.
"Come on, it'll be fun," I said, my voice barely audible over the thumping music.
We pushed through the throng, the crowd parting reluctantly as we made our way towards the secluded area.
The music was softer here, the shadows deeper and more ominous.
I felt a shiver run down my spine as we stepped into the dimly lit space, the air thick with an eerie atmosphere.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed behind us, causing panic to erupt in the crowd.
People surged forward, pushing us towards the shadowy corners of the room.
My pulse quickened; fear gripped my chest like a vice.
Jake pulled me close, his eyes scanning frantically for exits.
Sarah clutched my arm, her eyes wide with terror as she whispered "What's happening?"
We stumbled through the chaotic crowd, our breaths quickening with each step.
Jake's hand was slick with sweat, but I held on tight, my grip fueled by desperation.
The dimly lit room seemed to close in around us, shadows stretching ominously like dark tentacles.
Sarah trailed behind, her eyes wide with fear, her face pale in the faint light.
I could feel her panic, her fear infecting me like a virus.
We pushed forward, driven by the primal urge to escape.
The air was thick with the smell of sweat and smoke, making my head spin.
Suddenly, Jake stopped, his eyes fixed on something ahead.
I followed his gaze, my heart skipping a beat as I saw the narrow hallway leading to an emergency exit.
The sign above the door seemed to glow like a beacon, promising freedom from the chaos.
Jake pushed open the door, revealing a dark alley outside.
The cold air hit our faces like a slap, a stark contrast to the stifling club atmosphere.
I glanced back at the building, my mind racing with thoughts of escape and survival.
The music and screams grew fainter as we stepped into the alley, the darkness enveloping us like a shroud.
We hurried down the dark alley, our footsteps echoing off the walls, the only sound in the oppressive silence.
The cold air stung our faces, making my skin tingle with goosebumps.
I glanced back, ensuring we weren't followed, my heart pounding in my chest like a drum.
Suddenly, I froze, my eyes fixed on a figure standing still across the street.
The mask obscured their face, rendering them featureless, but their presence sent a shiver down my spine.
Fear gripped my chest like a vice, squeezing the air out of my lungs.
Without a word, I turned and ran, adrenaline surging through my veins like a potent elixir.
Jake and Sarah followed close behind, confusion and fear etched on their faces like a map of uncertainty.
We sprinted into the night, our footsteps pounding the pavement in unison, leaving the masked figure behind in the shadows.
The darkness seemed to swallow us whole, making it impossible to see more than a few feet ahead.
I could feel Jake's hand grasping mine, his grip tight with desperation as we fled into the unknown.
Sarah's ragged breathing echoed in my ear, her fear infecting me like a virus.
