I was lucky to have gotten in.
I still couldn’t believe that I had been accepted to Veritas Academy.
It was probably a mistake on the headmaster’s part.
I was a young, inexperienced werewolf who didn’t even know how to properly control my powers.
But here I was, attending the same school as vampires and other monsters.
The first couple of days were hellish.
I was constantly looking over my shoulder, waiting for someone to pounce on me and kill me.
But the other students seemed to leave me alone, and I began to start thinking that maybe I would be okay here.
That I could actually learn something and make some friends.
It was all very overwhelming, though.
I mean, there were ghosts in the school.
Real, actual ghosts.
And the building itself seemed to have a mind of its own.
Sometimes the doors were stuck, and sometimes they swung open before I could even touch them.
And then there were the teachers.
Some of them were normal, or at least as normal as you can get when you’re dealing with supernatural creatures.
Fangs And Fairy Dust
But there was one teacher who stood out from the rest.
Caius.
He was a vampire, and he taught history.
I had been in his class for two days now, and every time I looked at him, my heart felt like it was going to explode out of my chest.
He was so handsome, with his dark hair and piercing blue eyes.
And he moved with this fluid grace that made me want to watch him forever.
The final bell rings and the other students file out of the classroom, their footsteps echoing down the stone corridor.
I linger behind, my heart pounding against my ribs.
Caius stands at the front of the room, organizing papers on his desk.
His pale fingers move with practiced precision, his long nails clicking against the wood.
Fangs And Fairy Dust
I can feel his presence even from here, a stillness that fills the room and makes my wolf instincts bristle. I wipe my sweaty palms on my uniform pants and take one step forward.
The floorboard creaks beneath my foot, and Caius pauses in his work.
But he doesn’t turn around to look at me.
My throat feels dry as I force myself to cross the threshold and enter the classroom.
Every instinct is telling me to run, but I know that I can’t.
Fangs And Fairy Dust
Not now, not when I’ve come this far.
Standing at Caius’s desk, I fidget with the cover of my textbook and try to think of what to say.
The silence stretches out between us, punctuated only by the scratch of his pen on the paper and the steady tick of the ancient wall clock.
I can feel his eyes on me, even though he hasn’t turned around.
It’s as if he can sense my presence, can smell my fear.
Finally, I clear my throat and speak.
"Professor Caius?"
My voice comes out in a croak, and I have to swallow hard before I can continue.
"I was wondering if I could talk to you about the history project."
Caius pauses again, his pen hovering over the page.
For a long moment, he doesn’t move or respond.
Fangs And Fairy Dust
Then, slowly, he sets down his pen and turns to face me.
His eyes are blue and piercing, and they seem to bore into my very soul.
I feel like an insect pinned under a microscope, unable to escape his gaze. "Yes?"
His voice is low and smooth, but there’s an edge to it that makes me shiver.
I can feel my heart pounding against my ribs, and I know that he must be able to hear it too.
I take a deep breath and try to steady myself.
"I was just wondering if you could give me some more information about the project," I say, trying to keep my voice steady.
"What exactly do you want us to do?"
Caius regards me for a long moment before responding.
He seems to be studying me intently, as if he’s trying to read something in my expression or body language.
Then, slowly, he speaks.
"The assignment is clearly outlined in your syllabus," he says, his voice dripping with disdain.
"But if you need further clarification, then perhaps you should have paid closer attention in class."
I feel a flush rise in my cheeks as I realize that I’ve made a mistake.
Of course the assignment is outlined in the syllabus.
I just hadn’t been paying attention when he went over it. "I’m sorry," I mumble, looking down at my feet.
"I’ll make sure to pay closer attention next time."
Caius regards me for another long moment before speaking again.
"See that you do," he says finally, his voice still cold and distant.
"Now if you’ll excuse me, I have work to do."
