I'm a player.
That's what they call me, and it's true.
I like girls and girls like me.
I also like guys, and guys like me, too.
I'm bisexual and I don't hide it.
I date girls and guys, and then I move on.
Sometimes, it's just for a night.
Sometimes, it's for a few days or weeks.
I never stay with anyone for too long.
That's not my style.
But then I met him...
River is his name, and he's new here.
We share the same dorm, but that's not all.
We have to share the same small bedroom as well.
He hates me and I can't blame him.
I'm a player and he knows it.
The worst part is that I started to like him more and more every day.
He has black hair and blue eyes.
I've never seen anyone like him before, and I want to know him better.
But River is not like everyone else.
He is not human.
Fallen Crest Forever
Sprawled on my bed, I scroll through Instagram, pretending that River isn't sitting at his desk five feet away.
His pencil scratches against the paper as he works on his calculus homework.
I can feel his eyes on me, but I don't look up.
The tension between us is thick and heavy like a fog.
My phone buzzes with a text from Alex, my best friend and teammate on the basketball team.
"Tomorrow's practice is gonna be tough. Coach wants us to run drills until we drop."
I roll my eyes and type out a quick response.
"Yeah, yeah. I'll be there."
Another text pops up from Alex.
"Want to hang out tonight?"
Fallen Crest Forever
I hesitate for a moment before typing out a response.
"Yes."
I toss my phone onto the bed and grab my jacket from the back of the chair.
River's voice cuts through the silence.
"Going out again?" he asks, not looking up from his notebook.
Fallen Crest Forever
"Yeah, just meeting a friend," I reply, trying to sound casual, but my heart skips a beat when he finally meets my gaze.
I grab my basketball gear from the corner of the room, and River goes back to pretending to focus on his textbook.
But I know he's watching me out of the corner of his eye.
The room is small, and we're practically on top of each other.
I take my time putting on my shoes, making a show of tying the laces slowly.
River shifts in his seat, his pencil tapping against the desk.
My phone buzzes again with another text from Alex.
"Where are you? I thought you said you were coming over?"
I ignore it and keep packing up my things.
I don't want to leave.
Not yet.
River sighs loudly, and I glance over at him.
He's staring at me now, his blue eyes piercing through me.
I feel my heart pounding in my chest, and I quickly look away.
I grab my backpack and sling it over my shoulder, but as I turn to leave, I knock over River's water bottle that was sitting on the edge of his desk. "Shit!"
I exclaim as the bottle falls to the floor with a loud clatter.
River jumps up from his chair and rushes over to grab it before it spills all over the carpet.
We both reach for it at the same time, our hands brushing against each other.
A jolt of electricity shoots through my body at the touch, and I quickly pull my hand away like I've been burned.
"Sorry," I mumble, feeling heat rise to my cheeks.
River nods curtly and picks up the bottle, setting it back on his desk.
"I'll clean it up," he says gruffly, not meeting my eyes.
"No, it's okay. I'll do it."
I grab a towel from the bathroom and kneel down to wipe up the spill.
River stands there watching me, his arms crossed over his chest.
As I finish cleaning up the mess, he speaks again. "You're going to be late," he says flatly, glancing at his watch.
"Yeah," I reply, standing up and tossing the towel onto my bed.
"I should get going."
I start towards the door but hesitate for a moment before turning back to face him.
"Thanks for understanding," I say softly, meeting his gaze once more.
River shrugs nonchalantly but doesn't say anything else.
As I reach for the doorknob, River's voice stops me.
"Why do you keep running away?" he asks, his tone softer than before.
I pause, my hand hovering over the knob, and finally admit, "Because I'm scared of what happens if I stay."
Standing frozen by the door, I turn back to face him.
River has risen from his desk and is now standing in the middle of the room, staring at me.
We don't move.
We just stare at each other, the tension between us thickening like a fog.
His blue eyes lock onto mine, and I can feel my wolf instincts stirring beneath my skin.
My grip on the doorknob tightens as I fight the urge to either run or step closer to him.
River takes a slow step forward, leaving his textbook abandoned on the desk.
The familiar scent that's uniquely his fills my senses, and I catch a hint of something else beneath it - something inhuman.
My phone buzzes with another text from Alex, but I can't tear my gaze away from River.
My hand trembles on the doorknob as I force myself to break eye contact and look at the floor.
The air feels heavy, making it hard to breathe.
"I...I'm going to be late for practice," I mumble, my voice barely audible.
I pull the door open slowly, but River's scent still fills my nose, making my wolf side restless.
He doesn't move or speak, just watches me with those piercing blue eyes.
My phone buzzes again with another text from Alex, and I use that as my excuse to slip through the doorway quickly.
My footsteps echo through the empty corridor as I hurry away from our room.
But even though I'm putting distance between us, River's scent still clings to my clothes from our close encounter.
I check my phone and see three missed texts from Alex about practice.
Pausing at the stairwell, I lean against the cold wall and take a few deep breaths to calm my racing pulse.
A group of students passes by, their chatter fading as they round the corner.
I straighten up and continue walking, but then freeze in my tracks as I catch a familiar scent - River's scent.
He's followed me into the hallway.
"River, what are you doing here?" I ask, my voice a mix of surprise and something else I can't quite name.
He stops a few feet away, his expression unreadable. "I couldn't just let you leave like that," he replies, his tone steady but with an undercurrent of urgency.
"I need to know if you're running from me or from yourself."
I back away from him, my heart pounding in my chest.
But before I can respond, the fire alarm blares to life, its piercing shriek cutting through the tension between us.
The sound reverberates through the hallway, making it hard to think.
Students burst out of their rooms, rushing past us in the narrow corridor.
The sudden commotion sends me stumbling backward, and River stumbles forward, falling against my chest.
Instinctively, I catch him by the shoulders to steady him.
My wolf senses go into overdrive as his scent envelops me - a mix of earthy richness and something uniquely him.
For a moment, everything around us fades into chaos as I hold him against me.
But then someone's shoulder rams into my back, jolting us both forward.
River quickly steadies himself and grabs my wrist, pulling me toward the emergency exit at the end of the hall.
"Come on," he urges, his voice barely audible over the din of the alarm and the crowd rushing past us.
"We need to get out of here." But I resist, frozen in place by a mix of adrenaline and his touch.
My mind struggles to process what's happening - the alarm blaring in my ears, the rush of students around us, and most of all, River's fingers wrapped around my wrist.
He tugs harder on my arm, pulling me closer to him.
His face is inches from mine, his breath hot against my cheek as he yells over the noise, "We have to go!"
But I can't move.
"But why, River?" I shout back, my voice barely cutting through the chaos.
His eyes search mine, desperation etched into his features. "Because they're coming for you, and I can't let them take you."
My heart pounds in my chest as his grip on my wrist tightens.
Students push past us in waves, their panicked voices echoing through the hallway.
River's strange scent grows stronger as he pulls me closer to his side, shielding me from the crowd.
I scan the faces rushing by, searching for whoever River claims is hunting me.
But I don't recognize anyone.
My eyes dart to the emergency exit at the end of the hall, where a stream of students pours out into the night.
Through the small window in the door, I see dark figures moving in the courtyard below.
River follows my gaze and squeezes my wrist harder.
"Trust me," he whispers, his blue eyes intense.
The fire alarm continues blaring in our ears, and smoke starts filling the corridor from an unknown source.
"River, who are they?" I demand, my voice trembling with fear and urgency.
He glances back at the dark figures, his jaw set with determination. "The ones who want to control you, to use your power for their own ends."
I swallow hard, my mind racing as I struggle to comprehend the gravity of his words.
I stare at his face, searching for any sign of deception or madness.
But all I see are genuine concern and a fierce protectiveness in his blue eyes.
The fire alarm continues blaring in our ears as more students push past us.
Through the gaps in the crowd, I catch glimpses of those dark figures moving closer to the building.
My enhanced hearing picks up their heavy footsteps outside.
River's grip on my wrist tightens when I hesitate.
The smoke grows thicker, burning my sensitive nose.
A loud crash from downstairs makes my decision for me.
Swallowing my doubts and years of keeping everyone at arm's length, I squeeze River's hand and say, "Lead the way."
River nods, relief washing over his face as he pulls me toward the exit.
"We'll head to the woods," he says urgently, his voice barely rising above the chaos.
"There's a safe house there, and we can figure out our next move."
He leads me through the crowd, our hands locked together as we dodge rushing students.
The smoke grows thicker, making my enhanced senses burn.
We reach the side door, but voices echo from the stairwell below - heavy boots climbing up.
River presses me against the wall in an alcove, his body shielding mine from view.
My heart pounds in my chest as the dark figures pass nearby, their whispered commands carrying threats about "the wolf."
River's fingers squeeze mine when they get too close.
Through the haze, his blue eyes meet mine with fierce protectiveness.
I pull him away from the alcove, heading for the stairwell that leads up.
The smoke grows thicker, making my eyes water, but my enhanced senses guide me through the haze.
River stumbles on the steps, his breathing labored.
I wrap my arm around his waist to steady him as we climb higher.
At each landing, I pause to listen for pursuers while River catches his breath.
His body trembles against mine, but his grip on my hand remains firm.
Finally, we reach the top floor and push through the smoke-filled hallway.
Ahead, I spot the maintenance access door.
Through the small window, I see the night sky.
I grip the handle, my hands trembling from adrenaline and his proximity.
The metal feels cold against my palm as I push it open.
River stumbles through behind me, coughing from the smoke.
The night air hits us, crisp and clean compared to the burning hallway below.
Stars glitter overhead as we catch our breath.
His hand finds mine again in the darkness, his fingers intertwining with mine.
The door clicks shut behind us, and I hear boots stomping on the stairs below.
My heart pounds in my chest as River and I back away from the door.
We turn and run into the night, leaving the chaos behind.
We crouch behind a large oak tree, catching our breath after running through the dark woods.
River's hand still grips mine, his fingers intertwined with mine as we listen for any sounds of pursuit.
The darkness of the woods envelops us, but my enhanced senses allow me to see every detail.
His blue eyes meet mine in the moonlight, reflecting the shadows of the forest.
Our faces are inches apart, hidden in the shadows of the tree.
For a moment, the world around us fades away, and all that exists is the two of us, breathing heavily in unison.
I can see every detail of his expression in the dim light - the slight tremble in his lips, the way his eyes search mine for reassurance.
The forest around us falls silent, as if holding its breath in anticipation.
River's thumb begins to trace circles on my palm, sending shivers down my spine.
Despite the danger we just escaped, I can't tear my gaze away from him. The sound of distant sirens echoes through the night air, but they seem far away, almost like a distant memory.
My heart races in my chest as I realize how close we are to each other.
The heat from his body radiates towards me, warming my skin even in the chill of the night.
I can feel his breath on my cheek, a gentle caress that sends shivers down my spine.
His voice is barely a whisper when he speaks again, but it's enough to make my heart skip a beat.
I lead River through the dense forest, using my wolf senses to navigate through the darkness.
The moon casts shadows on the ground, and I expertly avoid fallen branches and roots.
River's ragged breathing and stumbling steps behind me make me slow our pace.
He trips over a root, and I quickly turn, catching him against my chest.
My hands instinctively find his waist, steadying him.
His body feels warm against mine, and his scent fills my nose.
My heart pounds in my chest as he clutches my shirt, his face pressed to my neck as he catches his breath.
I can feel his rapid heartbeat against my chest, and it sends a rush of adrenaline through me.
After a moment, he straightens but doesn't let go of my shirt.
His eyes meet mine in the dim light, and I can see the fear still lingering in them.
"Why did you come back for me?" River's voice is barely audible, but the vulnerability in it is unmistakable.
"Because I couldn't leave you behind," I reply, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside.
"But you know what they'll do if they catch us," he insists, his grip tightening as if afraid I'll disappear.
