The National History Library has been the heart of historical research for 50 years before its sudden closure.
I have spent countless hours there researching obscure topics, pouring over dusty tomes and crumbling manuscripts.
Over the years I have gotten to know some of the staff personally, like Mark the security guard and Sarah one of the librarians.
Despite its somewhat drab exterior, the interior is surprisingly modern with bright lighting, comfortable reading areas and even climate controlled archival rooms.
Nothing has ever happened there that even remotely approached excitement, until last week that is.
Last week everything changed.
The library was abruptly closed with no warning or explanation.
No one knows why, not even the staff.
Even though it was closed, I still went by there last night to see if there was anything going on.
Standing across the street from the main entrance, I noticed that all of the lights were still on inside.
Suddenly a chill ran down my spine as I realized that the lights were not just on, they were flickering.
It was then that I heard a low rumbling sound, like thunder on a summer day, but there wasn't a cloud in the sky.
