I was on the ward and seeing patients when my phone rang.
I looked at the caller ID and saw that it was from my family doctor, Dr.
Katz, and thought it was strange to receive a call from him during working hours.
I had no idea what was going to happen as I answered the call.
He only said, “Can you come to the hospital immediately?”
There was an urgency in his voice that sent a chill down my spine.
I didn’t have time to ask him anything else, because he hung up right after that.
I looked at the full waiting room and didn’t know what to do for a moment.
Uncertain how to explain it, I just told the patients that I was going to a meeting and would be back soon.
I didn’t know what had happened, but it must be something serious since he asked me to come over right away.
I guessed it must be about my family, I couldn’t think of anything else.
I tidied up the things on my desk and told my colleagues that I needed to leave for an emergency and left in a hurry.
The hospital was in the city centre and I quickly arrived.
Dr Katz didn’t tell me which department he was in, so I just asked at the front desk.
Someone came to take me to a private room on the third floor.
Dr Katz was already there waiting for me.
He stood up and shook hands with me with a smile on his face.
“Hi, how is your day?Did you eat?”
he asked me.
“Not yet,” I said quickly.
His words made me feel anxious, but I couldn’t lose my composure right now.
It’s not good news.”
My heart sank as soon as I heard his words.
The thoughts of bad news about my family kept rushing through my brain and I couldn’t shake them off.
I couldn’t help but ask, “What’s up, Dr.Katz? Is everything okay?”
He looked a little hesitant and avoided making eye contact with me as we sat down on the sofa.
His movements were a little slow and it seemed like he wanted to say something, but he didn’t know how to start.
He cleared his throat and said, “Ahem, you’ve been here for a while now, are you feeling uncomfortable?Water or anything?”
My heart pounded faster in my chest when he didn’t answer my question.
I tried to hold back my panic and asked again, “Dr.Katz… is everything okay?”
“Tell me what’s going on!”
I felt dizzy all of a sudden, sweat beading on my face as my heart raced faster with each passing second.
“I’m sorry,” Dr.Katz said after a pause.
