It was a rainy night in our small town, the kind of rain that painted the world in silver, and I should have been asleep.
I had tugged on my pajamas and gone to bed hours ago, but as my eyes fluttered open, I found myself mesmerized by the sight of the rain tapping against the windowpane.
The world was quiet and still, save for the pitter-patter of the rain, and I could hardly believe it was almost midnight.
But as I glanced over at my alarm clock, I realized that the time was just past three in the morning.
I had no idea how long I had been sitting here, staring out the window, but as I tried to force myself to go back to sleep, something caught my eye.
It was a flash of movement, a shadow darting across the yard.
I squinted and pressed my nose against the glass to get a better look, and that’s when I saw it.
A black cat stood at the edge of the yard, its eyes bright even in the darkness.
The cat seemed to be looking right at me, its gaze fixed on mine as if it could see through the glass and into my room.
A shiver ran down my spine, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away.
Even from this distance, I could see that the cat’s fur was sleek and glistening with rain, and its ears were pricked up as if it were listening for something.
Or maybe waiting for someone.
And then, just like that, the cat turned and vanished into the shadows of the night.
My heart thudded in my chest as I stared out into the yard, but there was no sign of the cat.
It was gone.
The rational part of my brain told me to go back to bed and forget about it.
It was probably just a stray cat passing through our yard.
But something inside me wouldn’t let it go.
There was something about that cat, something that drew me to it, and I knew that it wasn’t just any ordinary cat.
It was special.
Without even realizing what I was doing, I scrambled to my feet and threw open my bedroom door.
I glanced down the hall toward my brother’s room, half expecting to see him standing there, but his door was closed and everything was quiet.
He was still asleep, or at least that’s what I hoped.
I didn’t want to wake him and get him involved unless I absolutely had to.
But if my brother were awake, he would have thought that this was a bad idea and talked me out of it.
Because everyone knew that you never go into the woods after dark.
Not in this town.
Our town was full of strange and wonderful things, and some things were best left alone.
But this wasn’t just a stray cat.
This cat had come looking for me, and though I couldn’t explain why, I knew that we were meant to meet.
From my vantage point by the window, I had seen which direction the cat had gone, and now, as I looked out into the dark woods that surrounded our house, a plan began to form in my mind.

The sensible thing to do would be to go back to bed and forget about it, but the sensible thing had never been my strong suit.
I hesitated for a moment, torn, and I wished more than anything that Alex was here with me.
Alex Thompson was my best friend, and he would know exactly what to do in a situation like this.
He’d probably pull up a map on his phone and tell me exactly where the cat had gone, and why it had come looking for me in the first place.
Alex would know how to solve this, because he always did.
But Alex wasn’t here, and I didn’t have time to waste.
If I wanted to find the black cat, I knew I needed to hurry.
The woods were full of shadows, and even in the dead of night, I could feel eyes watching me, waiting for me to make my move.
Rain pelted the ground outside my window, as if the heavens themselves were warning me not to go, but by now, I had made up my mind.
I wasn’t going to let a little bit of rain stop me from making new friends.
The black cat had come for me, and I wasn’t going to let it leave without me.
The world outside was dark and wet, but with any luck, I would be back before anyone noticed I was gone.
Careful not to make a sound, I opened my closet door and fumbled around until I found an old raincoat hanging on a hook.
It didn’t quite reach my knees, but it was better than nothing.
I pulled it on over my pajamas and grabbed a flashlight from the shelf, then slowly crept out into the hallway.
The floorboards creaked beneath my feet, and I held my breath as I tiptoed past my parents’ room at the end of the hall.
Their door was open just a crack, and I could hear them snoring softly on the other side, so I quickly slipped past and made my way down the stairs.
It felt like the longest staircase in the world, each step creaking louder than the last, and I prayed that no one would hear me and catch me before I made it outside.
When I finally reached the bottom without being discovered, I let out a sigh of relief and smiled to myself.
This was going to be easy, I thought as I unlocked the back door.
All I had to do was find the cat and make it back before anyone noticed I was gone.
But things never went according to plan.
The woods behind our house stretched out before me, dark and foreboding, the trees looming overhead like sentinels guarding some long-forgotten secret.
A thick mist clung to the ground, shrouding everything in its path, and even with my flashlight, I could barely see more than a few feet in front of me.
I knew which way the cat had gone, more or less, but somehow, the path seemed to have grown longer since I’d first seen the cat from my window.
A flash of lightning lit up the sky, followed by a loud crack of thunder, and rain pelted down harder than ever, soaking me to the bone within seconds.
I shivered against the cold, wondering what I had gotten myself into, but it was too late to turn back now.

I trudged through the woods, my flashlight cutting through the darkness like a knife, and before long, I found myself standing in the heart of the woods.
That’s when I saw it: the mysterious black cat, perched on a fallen tree and outlined against another flash of lightning.
It seemed to be waiting for me, its yellow eyes glowing in the darkness, and I couldn’t help but feel that this was where we were meant to meet.
I stepped closer, my hand outstretched, and opened my mouth to call out to it, but before I could say a word, the cat hissed and bared its teeth in a display of aggression.
I stumbled backward, taken aback by its sudden change in behavior.
Cats were usually aloof and standoffish by nature, but this was different.
This was something else.
The cat continued to hiss and growl, its fur bristling like it was about to attack, and I knew I should probably leave it alone.
But I couldn’t help myself.
I felt drawn to this cat in a way that I couldn’t explain, and I had to know why.
“Shh,” I said, my voice barely more than a whisper.
“It’s okay, I won’t hurt you.”
But the cat didn’t seem to care what I had to say.
It just kept hissing and growling at me, its back arched and its tail puffed up like it was twice its normal size.
I took another step closer, slowly and cautiously, and the cat hissed even louder.
I held my breath, waiting for it to attack, but instead of leaping at me with claws bared, it simply continued to hiss and growl in warning.
I looked into its yellow eyes and saw a flicker of recognition there, a glimmer of something familiar that I couldn’t quite place.
And then it hit me: this cat wasn’t a stranger at all.
It was the same cat that had been watching me from my window all those nights.
It was the same cat that had lured me out into the woods in the middle of a storm.
It was the same cat that I’d been searching for all along.
“This is crazy,” I said to myself as I took another step closer.
But something inside me told me that it wasn’t crazy at all.
It was fate.
The cat continued to growl at me, its fur bristling with an otherworldly intensity that seemed to be radiating from every pore of its being.
I could feel it too, deep down in my bones, a familiar energy that pulsed through me like an electric current.
This cat wasn’t just any cat.
This cat was special in ways that I couldn’t begin to understand.
And for some reason, it wanted me to know why.
I reached out my hand one last time, my fingers inches away from its soft black fur, and held my breath as I waited for its reaction.
But the cat didn’t move.
It just sat there, staring at me with those piercing yellow eyes as if it were waiting for me to make the next move.
So I did.
