Aurora, Beckett's former mistress, has just quit her job and broken up with him after finding out that he plans to mate another woman, but she's shocked to discover that she's pregnant with Beckett's child.
Beckett Montgomery leans back in his chair and studies me, his dark green eyes boring into mine.
It’s been two days since our world came crashing down around us, and I don’t even recognize the man sitting across from me anymore.
The man I once loved with all my heart.
The man who ripped my heart out and stomped on it before handing it over to his new mate.
I press a hand to my stomach, trying to ignore the fluttering in my belly.
Romeo’s words keep replaying in my mind, making me question whether I’ve made the biggest mistake of my life.
He’s not wrong, but that doesn’t mean I can stay with Beckett.
“I need to know if you’ll be able to handle the conference or if I need to find a replacement for you,” he says, dragging me away from my thoughts.
I’m not sure if he’s talking about the one in Edinburgh or the one in London, but it doesn’t really matter.
“Why wouldn’t I be able to handle it?”
He gives me a pointed look, and I remember exactly why I’m not sure that I’ll be able to handle it.
Because standing up on stage in front of hundreds of people while wearing a fake smile is going to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.
And yet I can’t say no.
I promised myself I’d walk away from Beckett before we returned home from France, but I never said anything about staying away from Blackwood Industries.
And so here I am.
Barely able to keep myself together as Beckett tries to pretend that everything is fine between us.
That we haven’t been sharing a bed for the past nine months.
That he didn’t break my heart when he told me he was going to mate another woman.
“I don’t want you to push yourself too hard,” he says softly, leaning forward so that he can take my hand.
It’s a move that would have worked on the old Aurora.
The one who was so blinded by love that she would have done anything he asked of her.
But those days are long gone.
I pull my hand free and push myself out of my chair.
“Don’t worry about me.I’ll be just fine,” I tell him evenly, trying to ignore the pain in my chest.
Because the truth is that he’s wrong.
I won’t be just fine.
I’m hurting more than I ever thought possible.
And I’m fairly certain that my heart is broken beyond repair.
“You know that’s not what I meant.” He gets up and moves to stand in front of me, his hands coming up to cup my face as though he’s going to kiss me.
But he doesn’t.
He just stands there and stares into my eyes with a look of desperation on his face.
A look that makes my heart twist painfully in my chest.
“Aurora, please…” he whispers, pleading with me.
It’s a move that would have worked on the old Aurora.
The one who was so blinded by love that she would have done anything he asked of her.
But those days are long gone.
I take a step back and swallow hard when his hands fall from my face.
A shiver runs down my spine as though my body is mourning the loss of his touch.
