“T-minus 30 seconds to launch,” the computer voice said.
I swallowed hard and tried to calm my racing heart.
This was it.
The moment I’d been working for ever since I’d joined NASA six years ago.
We were about to launch toward the moon!
I stole a glance at the astronaut seated next to me and forced myself to focus on the task at hand.
“You ready?”
Sarah asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
I smiled at her and nodded.
Sarah was the only woman on this mission, and she was my best friend in the whole world.
We’d met at MIT and had been inseparable ever since.
But we’d never been on a mission together.
We’d never even worked in the same place.
The fact that she was here now, sitting beside me, gave me an extra boost of confidence that I desperately needed.
The tension was so thick in the air that you could cut it with a knife.
“T-minus 15 seconds,” the computer announced.
Sarah turned to face me and gave me a small smile.
I couldn’t help but grin back at her.
“T-minus 10 seconds.All systems are go.”
This was it!
T-minus 6, 5, 4…
“3, 2, 1…”
A deafening roar filled my ears as we blasted off of the planet’s surface at an incredible speed.
I was pushed back into my seat with such force that I could barely breathe, but somehow, I managed to stay conscious as we made our way into space.
It felt like an eternity before we finally broke through the atmosphere and I was able to open my eyes again, but when I did, I couldn’t help but gasp at the sight before me.
The Earth was so beautiful from up here.
And so small!
It looked like a little blue marble floating in a sea of blackness, and for a moment, I almost forgot why we were here.
But then Mark’s voice filled the cabin again and reminded me that anything less than 100% focus could get us all killed.
“Beginning lunar descent in… three minutes.”
I forced myself to look away from the window and back at the control panel in front of me.
Mark was still busy running diagnostics, while Sarah’s eyes darted back and forth between all of our other readouts just like mine were.
She must have noticed how nervous I was because she reached over and grabbed my hand in hers.
I turned to face her and saw a look of determination in her eyes that matched my own.
“We’re going to do this,” she said firmly.
“We’re going to land on the moon.”
