I was adopted when I was a year old.
My parents, Caleb and Sherri Graves, had already had a daughter who was two years old at the time.
They had another daughter a year later, and then a son three years after that.
I was the middle child of five.
My brother, Caleb Jr., and sister, Megan, were born to my parents, but I was adopted.
I never really knew my birth parents or why they gave me up for adoption.
I didn’t really care, either.
The Graves family adopted me, and I was loved just as much as my siblings were.
I had two parents who cared about me no matter what, and I had four siblings who did the same.
I also had a dog named Blueberry who thought I was her mom.
She followed me everywhere and snuggled with me on the couch whenever I watched TV.
I loved being part of the Graves family.
I also loved that Corey Smith lived next door.
Corey was a year older than me, and we met when I was two years old.
He was three at the time, going on four, and he became my instant friend.
Through my bedroom window, I watched as Corey and Caleb Jr. tossed the football back and forth in our backyard.
They were laughing, and their breath was visible in the cold air.
Corey spotted me and waved enthusiastically.
He pointed to the football in his hand and then gestured for me to come out and join them.
I hesitated.
The last time I played football with them, I had forgotten my gloves, and the ball came at me so fast that it stung my hands.
Caleb Jr. threw spirals like a pro, and I was just a kid who liked to play games.
I wasn’t really into sports.
But when Corey smiled at me through the window, I couldn’t say no.
I grabbed my jacket from the hook behind my door and slipped it on over my hoodie.
I grabbed my gloves from the basket of winter clothes that sat by the front door and stuffed my hands into them before heading downstairs. Blueberry was sitting at the bottom of the steps, her head cocked to the side as she waited for me to reach the bottom.
She knew I was going outside, and she wanted to come with me.
She always wanted to come with me.
As soon as I reached the bottom of the steps, Blueberry darted past me and out the door.
I stepped out onto our frost-covered lawn, my boots crunching against the dead grass.
Blueberry ran ahead of me, circling Corey and Caleb Jr. with excited barks.
The cold air stung my cheeks, and I could see my breath as I walked across the lawn to where they were standing.
I positioned myself between them, trying to look confident even though my heart was racing.
Corey adjusted his stance, the football spinning between his hands as he watched me.
Caleb Jr. shouted something from behind me, but I didn’t turn around to look at him.
I kept my eyes on Corey, watching as he pulled his arm back and threw the ball in my direction.
My gloved hands trembled as I raised them to catch the ball.
