"Run!"
I shout to Christopher and Junior.
I hear the loud bang of the gun and run as fast as my legs will carry me.
Behind me, I hear Christopher trumpeting and Junior squawking.
I turn and see that they are following me.
I can hear Jack's footsteps behind us.
He is running too.
We have to get away from him; he has a gun.
I spot a large tree in front of us with low branches.
"Up!" I shout.
"The tree, up!"
Without stopping, I run to the tree and jump into the air.
I catch a low branch and pull myself up into the tree.
Looking down, I see Christopher and Junior looking up at me.
How am I going to get them up here?
"Here, Junior."
I say, making a way with my hands for him to jump onto my feet.
"You can make it."
Junior flies onto my feet and I lift him up onto a branch beside me.
Now, how do I get Christopher up?
He is too big for me to lift.
Just then, I hear Jack's voice.
"Ha! Got them now," he says, stopping below the tree and looking up at us with an evil grin spreading across his face.
I look around me at the branches of the tree.
Maybe I can use one to hit Jack.
I spot a dead branch that looks sturdy.
It is thick as my arm and covered in dry leaves.
I can use it to knock the gun out of Jack's hand.
Junior is hopping from branch to branch beside me, nervously chirping.
Christopher is shifting his weight below us, trying to find a way up.
Jack raises his gun up at us, pointing the metal barrel at me.
My hands wrap around the rough bark of the branch, testing its weight.
The branch comes loose with a loud crack and Jack looks up sharply at me.
He sees the branch falling towards him and jumps to the side.
The branch crashes to the ground in a loud thud.
I hear Jack grunt as he jumps out of the way.
I look down at the ground, my eyes scanning the area where Jack was standing.
He is nowhere to be seen.
I spot something dark lying in the dirt, partially hidden by leaves.
It is a backpack, Jack's backpack.
I look around me quickly to make sure he is not looking.
I swing down from the branch, using my tail to steady myself on the thick limb of the tree.
I grab the backpack and swing back up into the tree.
"Quick," I whisper to Junior, "he'll be back soon."
Junior flies off his branch and perches on my shoulder as I open the bag.
Inside, there is a spare set of clothes and some food.
Jack must have been planning to stay here for a few days. I take the clothes out of the bag and examine them carefully.
They are dirty and smelly, but they are better than nothing.
The shirt has a large tear in it, but it will do.
I pull it over my head with Junior's help; he tugs on each sleeve until they are in place.
The pants are muddy and ripped at one knee, but they will have to do.
Junior hops onto my feet while I pull them up my legs.
They are big and baggy on me, but they cover my monkey body completely.
The sleeves of the shirt are too long and hang over my hands, but that will not matter if they hide me from Jack.
I hear Christopher trumpeting below us again and look up to see Jack standing below us again, brushing leaves from his clothes. "What happened?" he asks loudly, looking up at us in surprise.
Christopher backs away from him, trumpeting loudly again and flapping his ears wide at Jack's sudden reappearance.
Jack looks up at us sharply as I huddle against the thick trunk of the tree, trying to hide behind it.
He squints into the dim light of evening, trying to see what we are doing up here in this tree.
He can't see much of us because of the shadows cast by the setting sun and the thickness of our hiding spot behind a branch covered in leaves and twigs.
"Why are you hiding up there?" Jack calls out, his voice tinged with confusion and frustration.
"We know what you're planning, Jack," I shout back, trying to sound braver than I feel.
Jack's eyes narrow as he steps closer, "You don't understand; it's not what it seems."
