Emma Johnson encounters her past one-night stand, Liam, at a summer home in Malibu, where Emma is house-sitting while dealing with rejection from publishers for her book.
I’m in Malibu, house-sitting for a friend.
From the back deck, I can see the ocean, the waves, and a few surfers.
It’s peaceful with no one around, and I’m trying to get my mind off the fact that I’m a struggling writer who’s been rejected by every publisher I’ve sent my manuscript to this past year.
And then my phone rings.
“Sarah Thompson, you are a little minx,” I say with a grin, knowing she’s going to spill the beans on why she’s calling me.
I hold the phone between my ear and shoulder as I walk back inside to get a bottle of water.
Her voice crackles with excitement.
“I know!”
she squeals and then takes a deep breath.
“I am engaged to the most amazing man in the world, and I can’t believe it.” The excitement in her voice makes me smile.
She deserves so much happiness after everything she’s been through.
I’m just really glad she found someone like him.
He treats her like a queen and looks at her like she puts the stars in the sky.
I’ve never met him, but I know she’s head over heels in love with him.
I settle into the big, comfy couch and prop my feet up on the coffee table.
“That is the sweetest thing ever,” I tell her, hoping that doesn’t sound too fake.
I really am happy for her—just a little bit jealous too, if I’m being honest.
He seems like quite the catch.”
She giggles like a schoolgirl, even though she’s thirty-two years old.
“Girl, he is perfect.” She takes a deep breath before continuing.
“I can’t wait for you to meet him.”
“I can’t wait to meet him too!”
I can almost picture her smiling through the phone.
“I haven’t met your prince charming yet.”
My heart races at the thought of meeting Mr.
He must be something special if he’s captured Sarah’s heart.
When will I get to meet this hunk of burning love?”
“You know what’s going to happen,” she says with a sigh and then giggles again.
“I’m going to have you be my maid of honor.”
I shake my head as I laugh.
“No, you’re not. That’s what all best friends say to their besties.”
She’s silent for a second before finally speaking.
“So anyway, we were thinking of getting married sometime this winter.”
I frown at the thought of a winter wedding.
Knowing Sarah, she would have it on the beach in the summer.
“Winter?”
My voice is laced with shock.
“But you love summer.” Even though she loves wearing jeans and boots in the fall, we both love being at the beach in the summer and soaking up the sun.
“I know, but he wants to get married as soon as possible, so that means winter.”
I can picture her pouting right now.
I shake my head.
She needs to stop pouting and at least try to get what she wants.
She’s always been a pleaser, trying to make everyone else happy first.
“That’s not fair.” It’s not like she hasn’t waited long enough to get married, so he can at least give her the wedding of her dreams.
