“Hey, Em, can you come over here for a second?”
I sighed and set the cupcake I’d just finished decorating onto the tray next to me.
I turned to find my best friend and right-hand woman, Lucy Carter, grinning at me.
She was standing in front of a three-tiered wedding cake, the bottom layer covered in white fondant and the top two layers covered in a pale pink.
I stepped up next to her and looked at the design she was working on.
There were clusters of pink roses all around the cake, and the entire thing was bordered with tiny white balls.
Lucy had always been creative, but she’d really found her calling when it came to cake decorating.
Her designs were always so beautiful and intricate.
I couldn’t help but be proud of her.
“What do you need, Luce?”
She giggled and then held up her left hand.
My eyes went wide as I realized what I was looking at.
Did this mean what I thought it did?
Or had she just gotten herself a new piece of jewelry?
“Ben proposed to you?”
I held my breath as I waited for her answer.
“Yes!”
she squealed and then threw herself into my arms.
I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her tight.
“I’m so happy for you!”
“And the best part is that he asked if we could have the wedding here at The Sugar Spoon, and you know what I said.” She pulled back and looked at me expectantly.
I rolled my eyes.
“Of course I said yes!
Who knew you were going to come work for me and then meet the love of your life?”
I teased, but deep down, I was insanely happy for her.
She’d come to work for me right after graduating from college, when I’d opened up The Sugar Spoon.
It was a specialty bakery that served cupcakes, cookies, pastries, and gourmet coffee.
Lucy had been with me from the beginning, and now that we’d been open for almost five years, business was booming.
It felt great to be so successful at something I’d worked so hard for.
She held up her hand again and looked at the princess-cut diamond beaming back at her.
“I can’t wait to be Mrs.
I just hope you’re not upset with me for wanting to get married so soon after you and Michael broke up.”
I waved off her silly idea.
I’d thought I’d been in love with Michael.
He’d broken my heart and left me feeling hollow inside.
And to add insult to injury, he’d turned around and proposed to someone else just two months after we’d broken up.
Apparently I hadn’t been marriage material.
But Lucy was.
And I wasn’t going to let my failed relationship keep her from starting her own happily ever after.
“I’m not upset at all.
I’m thrilled for you and Ben.”
She pulled me into another hug.
“You’re the best friend a girl could have.”
A lump formed in my throat as I smiled and hugged her back.
I just hoped she was right.
I could really use some good fortune after all of the bad luck I’d had when it came to men.
