I blew out the candles on my cake and smiled.
I loved this.
It was my twenty-second birthday, and I was surrounded by my closest friends and family, all here to help me celebrate.
We were at The Ivy, my favorite restaurant, and I couldn’t have been happier.
I’d had a pretty decent day, my boyfriend had been in a meeting in the morning but had taken me out to lunch.
We’d had a great time, and he’d promised he’d meet us here in the evening.
Yes, he was a little late, and yes, I’d texted him a few times, but he hadn’t replied.
And then, just as we were sitting down to eat, he walked in.
I looked at the door, excited to see him and tell him all about my day.
But then I saw the woman clinging to his arm.
I knew her; she was his new partner at work.
I stood up, ignoring the confused glances Lily shot my way.
He smiled when he saw me and started to make his way over.
“Emily, darling.” He leaned in and tried to kiss my cheek.
“I’m so sorry I’m late.”
“Are you actually kidding me?”
I could hear people around us start to whisper and realized that everyone was staring at us.
“Excuse me?”
He frowned and glanced back at the woman still hanging on to his arm.
“I can’t believe you brought her here!”
His eyes widened as though he had no idea what I was talking about.
“You have some nerve,” Lily said from behind me.
Oh my God, she was here too?
And then I saw red.
“Lily, what’s going on?”
My boyfriend asked her, pulling his arm away from the woman so that he could put it around my waist instead.
“Alex is your boyfriend?”
“Who else would he be?And who are you?”
“His girlfriend of five years,” I spat out through gritted teeth.
The woman’s eyes went wide, but Alex’s narrowed in confusion.
“Five years?That’s not possible.”
“How do you think I feel?”
“I’ve been with him for five years, and you’re standing there like you don’t even understand what’s wrong with this situation.”
“Emily…” he started.
“Don’t,” I said immediately.
“I can’t believe that you would do this,” I said.
“In front of everyone.”
“Do what?”
“Wish your girlfriend a happy birthday?”
he asked in shock.
“Please don’t do that,” I said through gritted teeth.
“Don’t pretend that you’re some good guy who has no idea what’s going on.You knew it was my birthday.
You’ve taken me out to lunch and told me you’d meet me here.
And now you’re pretending that we aren’t even together?
I can’t believe you.” I could hear the tears in my voice and fought to keep them at bay.
“I’m not pretending anything,” he said firmly.
“I really had no idea that you thought we were together.”
The woman to my left let out a small gasp.
Lily grabbed my arm and squeezed it in support.
“How dare you?”
she spat at him.
“Don’t treat her like that.”
“How dare you come here and pretend like we aren’t together?”
I asked him angrily.
