Emily Jenkins is determined to get a job as the general manager at Ryan Mitchell's bar, but he is hesitant to give her a chance until she impresses him with her knowledge and experience in the music industry; meanwhile, in a bonus novella, Lily struggles to find her way back to her childhood friend and love, Mark, after her life is ripped apart.
“I know that I don’t have any experience working in a bar, but I honestly think that my background in the music industry would make me a valuable asset to the team here.”
Ryan raised an eyebrow at me, and I swallowed nervously as I tried to come up with a better answer.
“Most people would probably be happy to just have a job,” he said slowly, and I could tell from the look on his face that he didn’t think I was being honest with him.
I was going to have to try harder if I wanted him to give me the job, and I took a deep breath before I continued.
“I’ve spent the last several years working as a representative for a record label, so I’m very familiar with how the industry works,” I said as Ryan’s eyes held mine.
“I know how to book tours and negotiate contracts, and I have an ear for music.”
“An ear for music?”
Ryan asked as his eyes narrowed on me, and I nodded confidently even though it was clear that he wasn’t impressed.
“Yes,” I said without hesitation.
“I know what people like, and what they don’t.
I know how to spot talent, and what it takes to make them successful.
“And you think this will make you a good general manager?”
Ryan asked as he looked at me curiously, and I nodded in response.
“I think that if you want to stay competitive in this market, you need to bring in new customers,” I said, my voice steady even though I could see that Ryan didn’t seem very impressed.
“And the best way to do that is by bringing in new talent.”
“Is that so?”
Ryan asked as his lips tipped up into a smile that made my heart race.
I’d seen him flash that same smile on stage before, and it had been enough to turn my insides to jelly.
It was even more devastating up close, and it took everything in me not to melt into my chair as he continued to study me.
“And you think that you’re the person who can do that?”
he asked skeptically, and I felt the blush creep up my cheeks even though I didn’t want him to see it.
A lot of people would think that I was crazy for turning down the job that I’d been offered, especially since it was going to be so hard to find something else.
But the truth was that I wasn’t willing to settle just because it was easier, and I’d known that I was going to have to convince Ryan that I was the right person for the job from the start.
I’d known that he would probably be skeptical about whether or not I would actually want it, and if I was being honest, I could see why he might not be sure that I did.
Sure, I had a lot of experience in the music industry, but most of that was behind the scenes, and I knew that it was going to be hard for me to convince him that I’d actually want to work as a general manager at his bar when my resume said that I could easily get a better job somewhere else.
