I just have no idea what I’m doing.
I just have no idea what I’m supposed to do with a man.
I just have no idea how to be with someone without feeling like I’m going to be hurt.
"I’m sorry," I say as I push past him, "I just can’t do this, not yet."
"Emily, wait," he says as he reaches for me.
But I don’t want him to leave.
I don’t want him to stay.
I just want him to go away and never come back.
I want him to stop being so kind and considerate and caring.
I want him to stop making me feel like I’m worth something when I know that I’m not.
And as I open the front door and walk down the steps of the building, I know that I’ll never see him again.
My brother’s friend, Jake, set me up with a guy named Mike.
He’s attractive and kind and seems to have a good head on his shoulders.
"I think you’ll really like him," Jake said when he gave me Mike’s phone number, "Just give him a chance."
And on paper, Mike is the kind of guy that every girl dreams of being with.
He’s sweet and handsome and kind and seems to have his shit together.
But there’s something missing in the connection between us.
Something that’s not there that makes it hard for me to open up to him.
It’s not like I can put my finger on what it is that’s not right between us, it just feels like there’s something missing.
And as we sit across from one another at a fancy restaurant in the heart of the city, I know that something’s not right.
"You look really beautiful tonight," he says as he reaches across the table and takes my hand in his, "I hope you know how special you are."
"Thanks," I say as I force a smile across my face, "You’re really sweet."
"And you look really handsome too," he says as he grins from ear to ear, "You look very handsome too."
"Thanks," I say again as I take my hand back from his and place it in my lap, "You’re really sweet to say that."
"I’m sorry," I say as I take my hand back from his and place it in my lap, "I have to go to the bathroom."
"Of course," he says as he stands up and pulls my chair out for me, "I’ll be right here waiting for you when you get back."
"Thank you," I say with a smile as I force myself to stand up and walk towards the bathroom, "That’s very kind of you."

"Anything for you," he says with a smile, "I’ll be right here waiting for you when you get back."
