I'd been exploring the woods behind my house for as long as I could remember.
As a kid, I'd discovered all sorts of cool things, from an old deer antler to a rusty WWII grenade (which I'd been too scared to touch).
But nothing compared to what I found tonight.
The cave wasn't new.
I'd known about it since I was ten.
But I'd never gone in because it looked too creepy, like something out of a horror movie.
Tonight though, since it was Friday and my family was out of town for the weekend, I decided to check it out.
I'd always been curious and brave enough to try things.
So why not now?
The air was cool and damp as I ducked inside, using my flashlight to see where I was going.
The main room was only about ten feet by ten feet, but the ceiling rose about twenty feet above me.
There were old mining tools stuck in the dirt around the perimeter: pickaxes, shovels, even a few dynamite sticks.
A small table sat in the center of the room with a single lantern on top.
It looked like someone had been here recently, but where they went after sitting down remained a mystery.
The only other thing in the room was a large metal chest with a plush character sitting on top.
It looked like a red version of Garfield's dog, but with a mining helmet on its head.
I stared at it for a minute before deciding it was stupid and opening the chest.
