Camilla
She is a sophomore at a new school after her family moves from another city. She is introspective, romantic, and resilient. On her first day at the new school, she collides with Jayden, a senior and her classmate. Despite initially feeling embarrassed, she develops a close friendship with Jayden over the years. In high school, she struggles with unrequited love for Jayden, who was in a relationship with another girl. As they grow older, they maintain their friendship, attending the same company, living nearby, and even working on the same floor. Recently, an elevator malfunction forces them to confront their past feelings and secrets.
Jayden
He is a senior when he meets Camilla in the hallway of their school. He is charming, considerate, and introspective. Upon meeting Camilla, he feels an unusual connection with her, but at the time has a girlfriend. Over the years, he and Camilla remain close friends despite attending different schools and living apart. As they grow older, they continue to support each other through personal changes. In their late twenties, they work at the same company and live next door to each other. An elevator breakdown brings them together again, allowing them to reflect on their past relationship.
Kellen
He is Mira's longtime rival and Camilla's neighbor and coworker. He is confident, competitive, and introspective. Kellen works at the same company as Camilla but in a different department. His history with Mira is complex; they have been adversaries since high school when they collided in the hallway. As adults, their rivalry intensifies as they both aim for promotions at the same company. Recently relocated from New York City to Brooklyn, he lives next door to Camilla and experiences unexpected elevator mishaps with her.
I was a sophomore at a new school.
My first day was not going well.
I had just moved here with my family from another city, so everything was new to me.
I didn’t know the teachers, the students, or even the school building.
I kept looking at the map in my hand to find out where my next class was.
As I turned the corner walking down the hallway, I collided with someone and fell to the ground.
My books and bag were scattered everywhere.
I quickly stood up, embarrassed, and saw that it was a guy who had also fallen down because of our collision.
He looked up at me and our eyes met.
I felt an unusual connection to him as if time had stopped.
He quickly got up and helped me up.
"I’m sorry," I said, looking into his deep blue eyes.
"It’s okay," he replied with a small smile on his face.
His hair was messy and dark, and his smile made my heart skip a beat.
His eyes were beautiful and captivating.
I couldn’t stop staring at him for a second.
"Are you okay?"
he asked me again, bringing me back to reality.
"Yes, I’m fine," I replied him, still looking into his eyes.
"Let me help you with your books."
He started picking up my books from the floor and handed them over to me.
"Thanks."
My hands trembled slightly as I clutched the books to my chest.
The hallway was busy with students rushing past us, but I didn’t move from the spot.
I gathered my courage to talk to him again.
"I’m Camilla," I said, and to my surprise, my voice sounded steadier than I felt.
"I just moved here."
He adjusted his backpack strap, and that small smile still lingered on his lips.
"I see," he responded, "Well, welcome."
The bell rang, making me jump a bit.
But he didn’t rush off to his next class.
Instead, he extended his hand towards me in a gesture of friendship or perhaps something more.
"Jayden," he replied.
"Welcome to Jefferson High."
His warm hand lingered in mine as students rushed past us in the crowded hallway.
I noticed a small scar on his thumb, and I wondered how he got it.
He let go of my hand and glanced at the schedule I was holding.
"History next period?" he asked, pointing to the paper.
"Yes," I replied, feeling a bit more at ease now.
"Well, I have history too," he said, shouldering his backpack and gesturing down the hall.
"Want me to walk you there?"
I clutched my books tighter to my chest, trying to calm my racing heart.
"Sure," I said, forcing a smile.
We walked together through the crowded hallway, navigating past groups of students laughing and chatting with each other.
Jayden pointed out different landmarks along the way: the library, the cafeteria, and the science wing.
As we approached the history classroom, Jayden paused and turned to me with a curious look.
"You know," he said, lowering his voice, "there's a rumor about this school that might interest you."
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "What kind of rumor?"
