My life has always been a bit of a mess.
Iām not sure how I got here, but Iām fairly certain itās not good.
My heart pounds in my chest, and I try to take deep, slow breaths to calm myself.
I canāt let them see how scared I am.
I canāt let them see that theyāve already won.
I canāt let them know that theyāve taken everything from meāmy family, my home, my future.
The clear night sky is bright with moonlight, shining down on the werewolves gathered in a circle around me.
They watch me with hard eyes, their faces unreadable.
But I can read the hostility in their postures.
Their open and aggressive stances tell me that theyāre ready for me to make a run for it or attack them at any moment.
But I wonāt do either of those things.
Iāve learned my lesson from the last time I tried.
Instead, I stand before them, my hands clenched at my sides.
The Alpha is first in line, his hands behind his back as he gives me a once-over.
Heās tall and built like a tank, with muscles that ripple and twitch under his skin as he moves.
His black hair is slicked back from his forehead, and his bright green eyes are sharp and intense as they move over my body.
Thereās something about him that makes it difficult for me to meet his gaze for very long, but I try not to show it as I stand up straighter and meet his eyes.
He gives me a subtle nod of approval, and some of the tension leaves my body at the reassurance that he wonāt let them kill me.
Itās probably just my imagination, but the look he gives me seems to be tinged with something elseāsomething almost like sympathy or understanding.
But itās quickly gone, and Iām left wondering if Iād just imagined it.
The only other person who knows everything is standing next to him: the Beta, Alex Knight.
Heās tall and lean with short, dark hair that curls a little around his ears, and his gray eyes are sharp and intelligent as he watches me.
He gives me a small smile, but it doesnāt reach his eyes, which are full of worry and a hint of fear that this wonāt go well for me.
Not that I can blame him, but I donāt want his pity, so I focus on the Alpha instead.
I take a deep breath before I speak, but every word is a struggle as I try to keep my voice from shaking too much.
āI have something to tell you.ā
I pause for a moment, looking around the circle at the pack members who watch me with wary eyes.
The only thing they know about me is that Iām an outsider and that Iāve been forced on them by their Alpha, despite their protests.
Theyāre about to find out something else about meāone more reason for them to hate me.
Maybe even enough to kill me this time.
