She visits Puanani regularly to help with the pregnancy and expresses her excitement to meet Auli'i, whom she has been eagerly awaiting to meet. Kayla's disappearance on July 4th during a fireworks display severely impacts the story's progression.

I hadn’t eaten since dinner the night before, so my stomach was extremely hungry to the point that I could eat anything.
I could eat a whole elephant if I had to.
I could even swallow a twenty-four year old whole if I had to.
And that is exactly what I did.
At 8:40 AM HST, I got out of bed and went straight to the kitchen.
I saw my daughter Auli’i Cravalho, a twenty-four year old actress from California, visiting me for two months, waiting on me in the kitchen.
She was staying with me while I was pregnant with triplets as a surrogate for Kayla Kosuga, a twenty-one year old kindergarten teacher from Hawi, Hawaii.
Auli’i was waiting on me so we could have breakfast together.

The buttery smell filled our sunny kitchen, making my mouth water uncontrollably.
My stomach rumbled again as she drizzled maple syrup over the steaming pancake, creating glossy amber pools.
She slid the plate toward me across the granite countertop, her red sundress swishing as she moved.
The pancake's warmth radiated through the ceramic plate into my trembling hands.
I gripped my fork tightly, fighting the urge to devour everything in sight, including my daughter.
Auli’i glanced up, her eyes meeting mine with a hint of concern.
