I remember the day I got my powers.
It was a few days after my father died.
I was in my room, crying.
I was only 17 and I had just lost the most important person in my life.
My father was a hero, and he died saving people from a burning building.
He was a firefighter, but he was also a superhuman with the power of pyrokinesis.
He could control fire with his mind, and he used that power to save countless lives over the years.
But that day, he didn’t make it out in time.
The building collapsed on him, and he died instantly.
I missed him so much.
I wished I could have said goodbye to him one last time, but I knew that wasn’t possible.
He was gone, and there was nothing I could do about it.
And then it happened: I felt a strange sensation in my chest, like something was trying to get out.
It felt like my heart was going to explode, and I thought I was having a heart attack or something.
I closed my eyes and concentrated on the feeling, and then, it happened.
I felt a rush of energy wash over me, and then I knew.
I could feel it.
I had power.
I had strength.
I could save people just like my father did.
But first, I had to test my powers.
My mother had always told me that I was destined for greatness.
She told me that I was going to do amazing things one day.
And I was determined to prove her right.
On the news, we watched as flames engulfed the building.
The firefighters were doing their best to contain the blaze, but it was spreading.
The building was an apartment complex, and there were many people still inside.
The news helicopters were circling the building, capturing everything on camera.
That was how we saw my father run into the building.
He didn’t hesitate for a second; he just ran straight into the flames.
He had already saved many people, but there were still a few left.
He didn’t want to leave them behind.
But then, the building collapsed on him, and we all thought he was dead.
We watched in horror as the building burned to the ground, and we all thought that he was gone.
But then, a few minutes later, we saw something amazing happen.
The roof of the building opened up, and dozens of people poured out of the hole.
My father had created a pocket of breathable air near the top of the building so that the people he saved could survive long enough for help to arrive.
He had sacrificed himself to save them, but he made sure that they would be okay before he died.
It was the most heroic thing I had ever seen.
And I knew that I wanted to be just like him.
After his death, I was consumed by grief at first, but then that gave way to something else: determination.
I was going to be a hero just like my father, and I wasn’t going to let anything stand in my way.
But first, I had to test my powers.
When I went outside, I realized that they weren’t what I expected them to be.
I thought it would be fire, like my father’s power, but it wasn’t.
Instead, it was something else entirely: electricity.
I could control electricity with my mind, using it to do anything I wanted to within reason.
It wasn’t quite what I expected, but I wasn’t about to complain about it either.
But first, I had to figure out how to use it.
It took me a while to master my new abilities, but once I did, there was no stopping me.
I started small at first, using my powers to stop petty crimes and things like that.
Before long, though, I was doing so much more than that.
I wasn’t about to sit back and wait for someone else to take care of things when I knew that I could do it myself.

“So…that’s how I got powers.”
Sora stared at the screen.
She had been sitting on the couch in her college dorm room when she received the video message from me.
At first, she was beyond excited; she missed her brother so much!
But then she grew concerned.
“Are you sure you want to do this?”
she said after a while.
I frowned at her.
“What are you talking about?”
“You know what I’m talking about,” she said.
“Being a hero.
Your father was a hero and he died because of it.”
“So what if he did?”
“So are you sure you want to be a hero too?”
she said.
“You know that it’s dangerous, right?
You could get hurt or even killed.”
“Yeah,” she said.
“But even if you don’t die yourself, you could end up hurting someone else by mistake.”
“I know you’re excited about this,” she said.
“And I know you think that this is your destiny or whatever.
But please remember that with great power comes great responsibility.”
“Of course I know that,” I said.
“It’s just…” she said.
“I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“I won’t get hurt,” I said.
“I’ll make sure of it.”
“That’s what dad said too,” she said.
“And look what happened to him.”
“I’m not dad,” I said.
“And even if I was…I’m not going to make the same mistakes he did.”
“What do you mean?”
she said, her eyes widening with concern.
“You know what he did,” I said.
“He gave his life for other people.
He died a hero.
And I’m going to do the same thing one day.”
Sora opened her mouth as if she was about to say something.
But then she closed it again.
And after a few moments of silence, she sighed.
“Okay,” she said.
“If this is what you really want…I won’t try to stop you.”
She smiled at me.
“But promise me that you’ll be safe.”
“I will,” I said.
And I meant it too.
I was going to be the best hero the world had ever seen.
After our conversation ended, I felt a little conflicted.
I knew that Sora was just worried about me, but there was no way that I was going to let anything happen to me or anyone else!
Since the day my powers had awakened and my father died, I had been training nonstop.
But I was still far from ready.
My powers were strong, but I needed more than that if I wanted to be a real hero.
I needed skill and experience too.
That’s why I had been taking martial arts classes at the local gym as well as practicing my powers every day out in the park.
But even so, I knew that I still had a long way to go before I would be ready for anything like that.
The only problem was…I didn’t have time.
The city needed a hero now!
That’s why I had already started doing some small things here and there around town.
They weren’t much compared to what I would eventually do one day, but they were a good start at least.

The next day, I met with Taro at the park like usual.
But today was different than all the other days that we had met together before.
Today, he had brought a bag with him, and I could see that he was smiling from ear to ear even before he got close enough for me to see his face properly.
“Hey, Kyorama,” he said when we were finally close enough for me to see his face clearly.
“Today’s the big day!”
I grinned at him, excitement bubbling up inside of my body like a fountain of joy and happiness that I couldn’t keep inside of me any longer!
“Is it done?”
I asked him, excitement rolling off of me in waves like heat off of a hot oven turned up too high.
“It sure is!”
he said, and then he reached into the bag and pulled out something that I had never seen before in my life!
It was a costume!
A real costume, like the ones that all the heroes wore!
It was black all over, with red designs on it so that it looked like bolts of electricity were racing across it at lightning speed!
I reached out to touch it, but Taro pulled it away from me at the last second so that I only brushed against it instead of actually touching it like I wanted to do more than anything else in the entire world!
“Not yet,” he said with a grin on his face.
“We need to wait until we’re ready!”
I nodded at him and then watched as he put the costume back into the bag again.
I couldn’t believe it!
It felt like it had been forever since I first discovered my powers and started training so that one day I could be a hero too!
But now, finally, all of that work was starting to pay off!
And it felt amazing!
We spent the rest of the day training together like usual, but for me, everything felt different now that I was going to be wearing my own hero costume soon!
Everything felt more exciting and fun than ever before!
And as we trained together, I could feel myself getting stronger and stronger than ever before too!
By the end of the day, when Taro and I finally started to head our separate ways, I felt amazing!
But even though I wanted to keep training more and more, Taro told me that it was time to call it a day and go home instead, so that’s what I did.
I went home to our family’s apartment and then went to bed early, thinking about my new hero costume and all of the adventures that were waiting ahead of me in the future!
But as much fun as becoming a hero was, I quickly learned that it wasn’t all fun and games like I had thought that it would be when I was younger either.
